Garden City, KS—In a game that had just about everything—runs, big shots, and a frantic final 25 seconds—Garden City Community College held on for a thrilling 83–82 win over Cowley County on Saturday afternoon at Conestoga Arena. The Broncbusters were fueled by a career day from Desean Lewis, who poured in a career-high 25 points on an efficient 9-for-12 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three, to help GCCC improve to 9–4 overall and 4–3 in conference play.
Garden City set the tone early with sharp execution and defensive pressure, building a halftime edge behind timely buckets from Nico Doume and Lucas Kalimba, while Lewis sparked the offense with multiple threes as the Busters took a 44–37 lead into the break.
Cowley responded with a push in the second half, but every time momentum shifted, Lewis had an answer—knocking down deep triples and finishing in transition to keep Garden City in front. Kalimba was a steady presence inside with 15 points and 9 rebounds, and Jamir Westry added 12 points and 4 assists as the Broncbusters battled to the final horn.
Then came the chaos.
In the closing seconds, Cowley’s Marcus Smith—who delivered a standout performance with 33 points—helped the Tigers surge ahead and created one final scramble with a late steal. But Garden City refused to fold. After a final foul sequence in the last moments, the Broncbusters earned one last trip to the stripe. Doume calmly stepped up and knocked down the game-winning free throw at the buzzer to seal the one-point escape.
Cowley was led by Smith’s 33, while Garden City’s balanced effort behind Lewis’ scoring burst and Kalimba’s interior work proved just enough to survive an instant-classic finish.
