Garden City, KS – Garden City Community College delivered one of its most complete offensive performances of the season Saturday afternoon, taking down rival Dodge City Community College 107-102 in Conestoga Arena behind a career-high 33 points from Dasean Lewis.
Dodge City struck first with an early three, but the Broncbusters answered immediately and began to dictate the tempo. Lewis knocked down a pair of early triples to set the tone, and Garden City’s pressure defense turned into quick points the other way. Jamir Westry was a steady force in the opening stretch, attacking downhill and converting at the line as GCCC jumped out in front and kept the crowd engaged from the start.
The Busters’ offensive rhythm only grew as the half went on. Garden City mixed perimeter shooting with paint touches, and when initial shots didn’t fall, the Busters stayed active on the glass to generate second chances. That balance helped GCCC build a double-digit lead and keep it there, finishing the opening 20 minutes with a 57-39 halftime advantage.
Lewis was the headline all afternoon, and the efficiency made the night even louder. He finished 9-of-11 from the floor, an electric 7-of-8 from three, and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line to reach 33. Each time Dodge City threatened to chip into the margin, Lewis had an answer—whether it was a catch-and-shoot three, a transition pull-up, or a trip to the stripe.
Dodge City didn’t go away, and the second half turned into a track meet at times. The Conqs scored 63 points after halftime, knocking down big shots and attacking the rim to cut the margin and make the final stretch uncomfortable. Garden City stayed composed, continuing to get quality looks while making sure the game didn’t swing with a single run.
A big reason GCCC could withstand the push was contributions up and down the roster. Zaire Lott and Lucas Kalimba each added 12 points, while Jordon Nevill knocked down three triples and finished with 11. The Busters also leaned on their depth throughout the game, getting 43 bench points, which helped keep energy high and legs fresh during Dodge City’s rally attempts.
Garden City also won key “hidden” areas that often decide rivalry games. The Busters turned pressure into offense with 27 points off turnovers and were almost automatic at the line, shooting 23-of-25 (92%). Those extra possessions and free points were critical in a game where Dodge City poured in 100 and kept coming late.
With the win, Garden City improves to 17-10 overall and 12-9 in conference play, keeping momentum rolling as the regular season pushes toward the finish.
Next up: The Broncbusters head to Concordia to face Cloud County on February 25th. Tip is set for 7:30 PM.
