Maize holds off Pueblo East to win 68th Rocky Welton Invitational

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Schools from five states made up of the 68th Annual Rocky Welton Invitational on Friday and Saturday, held for the first time at The Refinery in Garden City. This year’s tournament would feature another solid lineup of wrestlers, and is considered one of the toughest tournament in the state.

The team title would not be decided until the final few matches of the tournament, as the Maize Eagles would hold on to their day one lead, and take home the tournament title over Pueblo East Eagles. Rose Hill and Andale, two Class 4A powers, would take third and fourth respectively, and Pine Creek finished in fifth.

Garden City finished in sixth place, led by a third place finish from Zachary Long at 126. Among area teams, Scott City finished in 20th, led by Blaze Gossman’s third place finish at 165, Ulysses was 24th, with Jaxsen Salinas placing third at 150, Dodge City was 26th, as Oakley Rich was seventh at 150 and Guillermo Morales was seventh at 215. Holcomb finished in 35th, led by Haegen Hartman’s ninth place finish at 138.

The Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament was Joshua Kerr from Maize South. The junior won the 144-pound weight class.
