Red Demon basketball teams collect four wins at Civic Center

The Dodge City High School basketball teams returned from the holiday break by hosting games at the Civic Center, beating Cimarron on in both the girls and boys game Friday night, and doing the same to Kingman on Saturday.
Lady Demons vs Cimarron
The Lady Demons came out of the gate strong against Cimarron, helping themselves to a 52-29 victory. Dodge City had four players score in double figures, with senior guards Kale Culwell and Addisyn Taylor each scoring 13, and senior forward Piper Mellinger dropping a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double.
They were especially efficient from three-point range, going 6-of-13 on the game. Taylor had three of the makes, while Culwell had two. The other one was made by junior guard Jersey Bogner, who played her first game of the year after a knee injury had kept her out for the first five games of the year.
Dodge City outscored Cimarron in three out of four quarters, losing the third quarter 11-9, but winning the other three by at least six points.
Red Demons vs Cimarron
Dodge City came out blazing in the first quarter of their 78-57 win, scoring 25 points. Cimarron was keeping pace through the first eight minutes, trailing only 25-21 after one, but Dodge City scored 23 points to the Blue Jays’ 10 in the second quarter to go up 48-31 at the half.
Senior forward Nathan Shulte went 4-of-4 from three in the first half, as the Demons were 10-of-15 from deep. They finished 12-of-21 after a much quieter second half as they coasted to a 78-57 win.
Junior guard Cru Lembright was the game’s leading scorer, managing 28 points on just 12 shot attempts. He was 9-of-12 from the field, 6-of-8 from three, and four-of-four from the free throw line.
Lady Demons vs Kingman
The Lady Demons came out on top 45-34 despite dealing with foul trouble throughout the last three quarters of the game. They had two starters foul out, while Mellinger only played 13 minutes in the win.
The aggression defensively was beneficial for Dodge City however, turning Kingman over 36 times in the win. In the first quarter, they outscored Kingman 19-10, before playing evenly in the second and third quarter.
Junior guard Emily Gutierrez led the Lady Demons with 16 points, while Taylor managed her second straight 13 point performance.
Red Demons vs Kingman
Dodge City collected their third straight win with the 70-51 win over Kingman on Saturday. The duo of senior guard Ty Scheck and Lembright combined for 42 points on the game. Lembright was 5-of-8 from three-point range.
The first half was closely contested as Dodge City led 31-28 at halftime. The second half went much smoother for the Demons, outscoring the Eagles 39-23. Shulte had a much quieter night from three, starting 0-of-4, but made the three to put cap off a big run for Dodge City and put the game away at 70-46.
Both Dodge City teams are back in action on Tuesday evening at the Fieldhouse, where they’ll take on Garden Plain. The girls game tips off at 6 p.m. and can be heard on Z98.
