Red Demons defeat Newton to conclude Tournament of Champions

The Dodge City Red Demons closed out their Tournament of Champions schedule later than anticipated, as Saturday’s tournament games were all postponed. The Railers made their way back to Dodge City to play the Demons for seventh place, where Dodge City came up with the 68-54 victory. Senior guard Ty Scheck had 12 points, seven rebounds and a school-record 13 assists.
The Demons got out to a hot start as junior guard Cru Lembright scored six of the 11 first quarter points for Dodge City, all while holding Newton to just four first quarter points. Lembright kept things going in the second quarter, ending the first half with 15 points as Dodge City took a 33-22 lead into the locker room.
Lembright was responsible for all four first half three-pointers for Dodge City, but in the second half, senior forwards Yaasir Mohammed and Nathan Shulte both hit threes to get the half started. The 39-22 lead was the largest Dodge City lead of the game.
The winless Railers fought hard throughout the game, pulling it as close as six points. Christian Henderson scored a game-leading 25 points.
The Demons had three double figure scorers, including Scheck, Lembright’s 18 and sophomore forward Jaycion Norris contributed 17 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
The Red Demons improve to 9-6 with the win and will play Garden City on Feb. 3 next with the girls game tipping off at 6 p.m. on Z98.
