Scott City boys place third, girls sixth at Roundball Classic

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The final day of the Roundball Classic on Saturday wrapped up with both Scott City basketball teams playing at Garden City Community College inside Consetoga arena. The girls would take on Lakin and the boys faced Ottawa. The Beavers would see split results, as the Lady Broncs rallied in the final period to win 49-45, while the boys used the deep ball to down Ottawa 76-47.

Lakin Girls 49, Scott City 45
Scott City would start off well, but injuries took its toll in the final quarter. The Lady Beavers would use an 11-1 run early on and lead 11-3 at the three-minute mark of the first half. Lakin bounced back with eight straight to tie the game at 11 late in the first quarter, In the second, Scott City would lead 15-14 with 4:37 left before halftime, and closed the half with nine straight to lead 24-14 at the break. After building a 28-14 lead in the first minute of the second half, and 30-16 two minutes into the third frame, the Beavers would go cold and saw the Lady Broncs make an initial push. Lakin (3-1) used mini 4-0 spurts and pulled to within 38-29 after the third quarter, with a run of 13-4 in a five-minute span. Scott City (1-3) not only saw players foul out early in the fourth quarter, but they would also lose players with injuries. In all, four starters were out of the lineup due to injuries and fouling out with 4:31 left. That’s when the Lady Broncs took the lead at 39-38, and built their lead to 49-42 late in the game, before holding on for a 49-45 win. Scott City had two of their five in the lineup to close the game who made their varsity debut.

Lakin was led by Jordan McCombs with 17 points, who left the game early in the fourth quarter due to an injury. The Lady Broncs went 23-32 at the charity line and had 16 turnovers. Scott City was led by Piper Fox with 11 points and Peyton Gentry with 10 points. Fox fouled out with 4:31 left and Gentry left the game with an injury in the second half. The Lady Beavers struggled at the line, going just 7-19 and had 21 turnovers.

It was the first meeting in two seasons, a Lakin has now won two straight in the series. Scott City leads the all-time series 29-23. The Lady Broncs finish fifth and the Lady Beavers sixth in the Roundball Classic.

Playing a first-time opponent for the third straight day, Scott City trailed 8-7 after the first quarter. The final 24 minutes would be their most dominant portion of the early season. Ottawa led 13-9 with 6:52 left in the second, before the Beavers clsoed the final 6:24 of the half ona 24-4 run and led 33-17 at the break. Scott City (2-2) was able to build their lead to 21 in the third quarter, before leading 52-35 heading into the final frame. The Cyclones saw the Beavers lead by 22 early in the fourth quarter, and the closest Ottawa (2-3) got in the final quarter was 62-44 with 3:12 left. Scott City closed on a 14-7 run over the last three minutes to cruise to a 76-47 win, putting up a season-high of points and holding an opponent to their season-low. The Beavers hit 14 triples on the afternoon.

In the third place game, Scott City was led by Avery Radke with a career-high 26 points, hitting eight triples, while Junior Meza added 16 and Mickey Gossman poured in a career-high 10 points, all in the second half. The Beavers went just 4-5 at the free throw line and finished with 13 turnovers. Ottawa was led by Jace Mourning with 17 and Adien McCullough with 12. The Cyclones were 5-11 from the free throw line and finished with 13 turnovers.

It was the first meeting between the two programs. Scott City faced their second Frontier League team in the past three days and are now 3-2 against Frontier League schools.

Saturday’s girls results saw Lawrence Free State defeat Coronado 59-22 in the seventh place game, Garden City knocked off Hugoton 53-35 in the third place game, and Ottawa defeated Frontier League foe Tonganoxie 60-55 in the championship game. Other boys results on Saturday saw Tonganoxie hold off Lakin 85-71 in the seventh place game, Garden City outlasted Coronado 67-58 for fifth place, and Hugoton blew out Lawrence Free State in the championship 60-31.

Scott City will play at Goodland to open up GWAC play on Tuesday.
