Scott City boys, Russell girls take team titles at Christmas City Classic Tournaments

WaKeeney, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The first weekend of tournaments saw several schools head to WaKeeney on Friday and Saturday for the Christmas City Classic. It would be the girls tournament to take the mats first on Friday and the boys followed on Saturday.

Russell would have a big showing to win the girls tournament on Friday, while Scott City’s boys would pull away in the final round on Saturday to win the team title.

On Friday, the Lady Broncos would hold off Colby for the team title, winning four of the weight classes. Scott City placed fifth overall, as they saw Haylie McDaniel win the tournament at 110 pounds. Cimarron was 15th, as Peyton Smith won the 235-pound division, and Lakin placed 18th. Russell’s Arianna Weigel was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler, after the freshman won the 120-pound division.

Saturday saw the boys take the mats at Trego Community High School. Scott City would pull away from Ellsworth. Cimarron placed third, and Lakin was ninth. The Beavers would have six tournament champions, with Uli Armendariz at 106, Jeremiah Gonzalez at 132, Trenton Frank at 144, Matthew Wheeler at 150, Blaze Gossman at 165 and Easton Eisenhour at 190. Wheeler was named the Outsanding Wrestler of the tournament, with his win at 150.
