Scott City picks up sweep over Larned
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Tuesday night’s doubleheader featured a pair of teams that were facing off in their final non-conference games of the season, as Scott City played host to Larned inside the Scott Community Events Center. It would be a home sweep for the Beavers, as the girls won 36-31, and the boys won 57-17.
Scott City Girls 36, Larned 31
It was the first time since 2010 that the teams met in Scott City, which was the final MSAA game for both teams. Larned jumped out quickly to a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes. The Lady Beavers would settle down and cut down on the turnovers, despite having just one field goal in the opening eight minutes, as they trailed 11-3. Trailing 12-3 early in the seocnd quarter, Scott City (7-11) used an 8-2 run over three minutes to pull to within 14-11 with 3:07 left before halftime. Both teams traded baskets as the Lady Indians took a 16-13 halftime lead. The third quarter perhaps saw the best eight minutes of play this season by the Lady Beavers, as they would outscore Larned (13-6) 17-5, using runs of 9-2 and 8-0 to close out the period to lead 30-21 heading into the fourth quarter. Scott City led 32-22 with 7:02 left, only to see the Lady Indians make a final push, using the three-pointer to get back into the game. After Larned trailed 34-31 with 44 seconds left, the Lady Beavers scored the final basket of the game to make it 36-31, and hung on for the win.
Lily Lightner had a career-high 14 points to lead Scott City, while Piper Fox added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Beavers, who shot 6-19 from the free throw line and finished with 12 turnovers. Jadyn Crosby led Larned with 13 points, as they went 4-8 at the foul line and had 12 turnovers.
Scott City has won seven straight in the series, and now leads the all-time series 19-14. The Lady Beavers have now won two of their last three and remain in the 11th spot in the Larned Sub-State standings. Larned reamins in seventh.

Scott City Boys 57, Larned 17
Scott City’s defense would swarm Larned and the Indians would have no answer for it. The Beavers turned those turnovers into points early on, using a 9-0 and 10-0 run in the first quarter, as they took a 19-4 lead into the second quarter. After the Indians scored the first three points of the second quarter, Scott City (10-8) used runs of five straight and closed the final 2:30 of the first half with six in a row to lead 31-12 at the break. In the seocnd half, Larned (6-13) was only able to score five points, as they would close the final 10:52 of the game without a point. The Beavers took a 53-17 lead into the fourth quarter, as a continuous clock closed out the final eight minutes, en route to a 57-17 win. Scott City scored the games final 15 points.
Junior Meza led the way with 19 points, and Brendan Cook had a career-high 10 points. The Beavers were 4-7 from the free throw line, and finished with eight turnovers. Larned got five points apiece from Luke Krehbiel and Kylier Greene, as they were 4-10 from the charity line and finished with 27 turnovers.
Scott City has won eight straight in the series, as the Indians played in Scott City for the first time since 2011, when they lost the sub-state opener to the Beavers. The series lead is now 30-7 in favor of Scott City. After Tuesday night, Scott City is tied with Hoisington for the fourth spot in the 3A Larned standings, and are just 1/2 game out of third place. Larned is sitll in the 13th place position.
