Scott City splits doubleheader with Goodland

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City and Goodland would meet up for the second time this year on Tuesday, this time inside the Scott Community Events Center. It would be a split in the doubleheader, as the Cowgirls picked up a 56-29 win, while the Beaver boys took home a 55-39 victory.

Goodland jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. The Cowgirls would be hot from three-point range in the first half, connecting on seven triples. Goodland (11-5, 6-1 GWAC) used two big runs int he game. Their first came over a three-minute stretch in the first and second quarters, when they went on an 17-0 run to lead 30-8 with 5:03 left before halftime. Their second came in another three-minute stretch to lead 46-14 in the opening seconds of the second half. Scott City (5-7, 2-3) didn’t have their first run of the night until late in the third and early fourth quarters, when they scored seven straight. It woudl be 52-21 going into the fourth quarter, as it would be a continuous clock in the final eight minuts, as the Cowgirls picked up a big win.

Leading the way for Goodland was Lauren Linton with a season-high 15 poitns, and Hope Biermann tied a season-high 14 points. The Cowgirls were 8-11 at the free throw line and finished with 10 turnovers. Scott City was led by Peyton Gentry’s eight points, as they finished 7-10 at the charity line and had 25 turnovers.

With the win, Goodland has now won 12 straight in the series, and lead the series since 1981 45-30.

Scott City would win with high percentage shots around the rim and with good defense throughout the night. The Beavers never trailed, as they put together an 11-2 run in a four-minute stretch of the first quarter, and took at 15-7 lead into the second period. They scored the first eight points of the second stanza to lead 23-7 with 5:44 left before halftime. The Cowboys got it to within nine at 27-18 in the opening 20 seconds of the third quarter, and that was the closest they got the rest of the way. Scott City (7-5, 3-2 GWAC) used a 14-4 run over the next five and a half minutes to lead 41-22 late in the third qurater. Goodland (7-9, 4-3) got it to within 12 in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but a 10-2 run in the middle of the final period gave Scott City a 55-35 lead with 2:28 left, before settling for a 55-39 win.

Junior Meza led the way for the Beavers with 20 points, and Brody Stoecklein added 10. Scott City was 10-14 from the free throw line and finished with 10 turnovers. The Beavers have won five of their last six games. Goodland got 21 from Braylon Mull and 11 from Konner Collett, as the Cowboys finished 8-11 at the charity line and committed 11 turnovers. Goodland has dropped four straight games.

The win snapped a four-game win streak by the Cowboys in the series. Since 1979, Scott City leads the series 42-35.
