Scott City splits home doubleheader with Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a doubleheader that was delayed 13 days, Scott City played host to Colby in a big GWAC doubleheader on Thursday night inside the Scott Community Events Center. Both games would end up being close games down the stretch, as the Lady Eagles held off a late Scott City rally in a 49-41 win, while the Beaver boys rallied for a 51-47 thriller.

In a game that saw five lead changes and two ties in the first half, the second half would see a big rally by the Lady Beavers. Colby used two 7-0 runs and a 5-0 run in teh first half to lead 19-15 at the break, and slowly extended their lead in the third quarter. After points were at a premium in the second quarter, the third proved to be different. The Eagles would grow their lead to 11 on a pair of occasions, with the last being at 36-25 at the end of the third quarter. Colby (8-6, 4-1 GWAC) extended their lead to 41-27 with 5:32 left. That’s when Scott City (5-8, 2-4) got back in the game. The Lady Beavers used three straight triples and a three-point play to pull to within 43-39 with 2:51 left. However, the Lady Eagles had an answer. The second time Scott City got to within four, Colby came back with a three pointer with 1:50 left, and scored one more point to take a 49-41 win.

Harper Vaughn led the way with 18 points, while Shaylee Holzmeister added 16, as the Lady Eagles went 12-20 from the free throw line and finished with 14 turnovers. Scott City got a career-high 20 points from Peyton Gentry, as they were just 3-7 from the free throw line and had 21 turnovers.

Colby has now won nine straight and 11 of the last 12 in the series, as they hold a 64-18 record in the series since 1980. Colby received word earlier in the day that their game against Life Prep from Wichita is a forfeit win, and before the game, their record changed from 6-7 to 7-6. Goodland also picked up a 2-0 forfeit win and their record currently stands at 12-4.

The finale of the night turned out to be a thriller, with eight ties and eight lead changes. Neither team had a lead bigger than six points the entire night. Scott City took a 13-11 lead into the second quarter, before a 9-3 Eagle run gave them a 20-16 lead late in the first half. The Beavers had a tough time scoring in the second quarter as they had only two field goals and saw Colby pull away late in the half to lead 26-20 at the break. Scott City (8-5, 4-2 GWAC) slowly chipped away at the defiicit, before taking their first lead of the second half at 35-33 with just under two minutes left in the third frame. The Eagles would score the next four points and lead 37-35 heading into the final quarter. To begin the fourth quarter, the Beavers scored the first eight points of the period to lead 43-37 with 3:39 left. Colby (8-6, 3-2) got ended a four and a half minute drought and would eventually pull to within 45-43 with 2:16 left. Both teams would answer each others possession in the final two minutes, as the Beavers picked up a 51-47 win over the No. 9 ranked team in Class 3A.

Leading the way for Scott City was Junior Meza with 16 points, and Cooper Irvin scored a career-high 16 points as well, as the Beavers were 7-8 from the free throw line and had 11 turnovers. Colby was led by Jordan Jones with 21 points and Cobin Curry added 13, as the Eagles were 5-8 from the charity line and had nine turnovers. It was the second straight game that Colby failed to make a three-pointer.

Scott City has won back to back games against Colby for the first time since 2019, and have won three straight at home in the series. Since 1980, the Eagles lead the series 45-38.
