Scott City splits with Tonganoxie in Roundball Tournament opener
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On the opening night of the Roundball Classic, Scott City played host to Tonganoxie in their first ever matchup inside the Scott Community Events Center. It would be a split, as the Lady Chieftains took the opener 56-45, while the Beaver boys took the nightcap 71-61.

Tonganoxie never trailed, and after being tied early on at two, a 9-0 run propelled them into the lead as they never looked back. The Lady Beavers were able to bounce back and pull to within 14-10 after the first quarter. It would be back and forth for the second frame, as the Lady Chieftains led 30-20 at recess. The third quarter would remain the same, as the teams traded baskets, as it remained a 10-point game at 44-34 going into the final frame. Scott City (0-2) rallied to make it a 46-41 game with 6:03 left, but a Tonganoxie (2-0) 10-0 run over the final 4:49 of the game proved to be too much, as the Lady Beavers got a pair of baskets late, before falling 56-45.
Alyssa Schoeneck led the way with 32 points, while Addy Schooler had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the win for the Lady Chieftains, as they shot 9-13 at the free throw line, and had 13 turnovers. Scott City was led by Piper Fox, who had a career-high 21 points. The Lady Beavers went 4-7 from the foul line and had 21 turnovers.
It was the first-ever matchup beween the two teams, and the first time Scott City has faced a team from the Frontier League.

The finale of the night saw a pair of 0-1 teams looking to avenge close losses in their opener. Scott City would come out guns a blazin with 22 first quarter points, as they took a 22-8 lead after the first quarter. Whatever momentum the Beavers had was squashed early in the second frame, when the Cheieftians put together a 22-7 run of their own to take their only lead of the night at 30-27 with 2:37 left before halftime. Scott City (1-1) scored the final nine points of the half and the first four of the second half to lead 40-30 in the first minute of the third quarter. Tonganoxie (0-2) got no closer than three, as the Beavers grew their lead to seven after the third quarter at 48-41. They would build their lead to 59-45 with 4:47 left and maintain a comfortable lead throughout the final stanza, before taking a 71-61 win.
Junior Meza led the way with a career-high 23 points, while Avery Radke added 19 and Drew Metzger had a career-high 12 points and grabbed eight boards. Scott City shot 13-16 at the charity line and had 19 turnovers unofficially. Nolan McGuire led Tonganoxie with 20 points, and Lachlan McRae finished with 19 points, as the Chieftains went 7-13 from the free throw line and had 20 turnovers.
It was the first meeting between the two teams, and it was the fourth time Scott City has faced a Frontier League team since 2014. They’re now 2-2 against Frontier League members.

Other girls scores on day one of the Roundball Classic saw Garden City defeat Lawrence Free State 60-42, Ottawa knock off Lakin 62-40 and Hugoton down Coronado 69-14. The Consolation Semis on Friday will have Scott City face Lawrence Free State at 3:30 pm at Garden City High School and Lakin take on Coronado at 3:30 at Garden City Community College. The Campionship Semis on Friday will have Garden City face Tonganoxie at 6:30 at the high school, and Ottawa take on Hugoton at 6:30 at GCCC.
Boys scores from Thursday saw Lawrence Free State pull away from Garden City 52-41, Ottawa rout Lakin 64-35 and Hugoton defeat Coronado 76-62. Friday’s Consolation Semis at 5 pm will have Garden City against Tonganoxie at GCHS and Lakin take on Coronado at GCCC. The 8 pm Championship Semis will see Lawrence Free State match up against Scott City at GCHS and Ottawa take on Hugoton at GCCC.
