Scott City sweeps Cimarron on Senior Night

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In the regular season finale, Scott City played host to the Cimarron Bluejays on Friday night inside the Scott Community Events Center. It would be a night to remember for the Beavers, as they picked up a pair of dominating wins. Scott City would win 51-18 in the girls game, while the boys completed the sweep with a 60-30 victory.

The Lady Beavers couldn’t have asked for a better start. Scott City jumped out to an early 13-0 lead before a Lady Bluejay basket. The run would end up being 20-1 early in the second quarter, as the Lady Beavers closed the final 3:27 of the half on a 9-2 run to lead 31-9 at the break. Scott City (12-8, 6-6 GWAC) led by 24 before a Lady Bluejay run of five straight pulled them to within 33-14. Another Lady Beaver run of 14-2 pushed the score to 47-16 after the third quarter. Cimarron (8-12, 3-9) scored two fourth quarter points and Scott City scored four in a game that had a continuous clock over the final eight minutes, as the Lady Beavers prevailed 51-18.

Scott City was led by Avery Lewis and Piper Fox with 10 points apiece, as they were 6-7 at the foul line with 12 turnovers. Cimarron got a game-high 11 points from Teagan Eskam. The Lady Bluejays committed 21 turnovers and were 2-6 from the free throw line.

With the win, Scott City has won four straight, which ties the longest in the series for the Lady Beavers. It was the second largest margin of victory for Scott City in the series, as Cimarron leads the all-time series 17-13. Scott City’s 12 wins are the most since 2020, and the six wins are the most since they won seven in 2020. They will finish in fourth place in GWAC play.

Cimarron would keep it close in the first eight minutes, but the Beavers would be too much. Scott City (16-4, 8-4 GWAC) never trailed, but saw their lead diminish to 14-11 with under two minutes left in the first quarter. The Beavers would go on a 24-4 run over a eight minute stretch to lead 38-15 with under 90 seconds left before halftime. The Bluejays would score the next five points of the game to get to within 38-20 early in the third frame. Scott City would use a 17-4 run after that to lead 55-24 heading in to the final quarter. Cimarron (4-16, 0-12) outscored the Beavers in the final period that had a continuous clock to make the final 60-30.

Jackson Rumford led the way for Scott City with 15 points, while Eloy Ruelas added 12 and Avery Radke and Alex Tarango had 10 points apiece. The Beavers were 2-5 from the charity line and had 13 turnovers. Cimarron got 11 points from Trace Kopper, as the Bluejays had 22 turnovers and went 2-4 at the free throw line.

Scott City has now won eight straight in the series, and lead the all-time series 23-1. The 16 wins are the most since the 2015-16 season, and the eight wins in GWAC play are the most since the 2014-15 season.
