Scott City sweeps third place games in Sterling

Sterling, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The final day of competition was moved up 90 minutes for Scott City on Friday, due to the incoming weather. Battling sickness and a short turnaround after having the last games on Thursday night, the Beavers basketball teams would bounce back and in a big way, as the Lady Beavers picked up a 48-37 win over Sterling in the third place girls game, while the boys took home a 63-28 blowout win over Hutchinson Trinity in the third place boys game.

It was the second time in three years the teams met up in the third place girls game. Sterling would hold an early lead 10-9 after the first quarter in a period that saw three ties and two lead changes. The Lady Black Bears led 14-10 with 5:58 left before halftime. Scott City (5-6) would hold Sterling scoreless for the rest of the first half, and used a 14-0 run to close out the half with to lead 24-14. They scored the first basket of the second half to lead 26-14. The Lady Black Bears pulled to within 28-21 midway through the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Beavers pushed their lead to 41-26 with 6:19 left, only to see Sterling (4-10) score six straight to pull to within 41-32 with 4:43 left. However, he teams would trade points down the stretch, and Scott City took a 48-37 win.

Leading the way for Scott City was Piper Fox with 15 points, while Peyton Gentry added 11, all in the first half. The Lady Beavers went 12-14 from the foul line, and finished with 11 turnovers. Sterling got 21 from Aleya Ravenstien, as they were only 4-10 from the free throw line, and committed 14 turnovers.

It was the second straight win in the series for Scott City, as they have finished third for the second time in three seasons, after winning the tournament title last year. Piper Fox was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Scott City would trailed briefly, and after it was tied at seven, they would never looked back. They scored the next eight points and took an 18-11 lead after the opening frame. Over a nearly five-minute stretch, the Beavers scored the next 12 points to take a 29-11 lead with 3:29 left in the half. The Celtics were unable to get a run going, as Scott City (6-5) led 36-18 at the berak. In the second half, the Beaver defense would hold Hutch Trinity (4-9) to just 10 second half points. They grew their lead to 56-27 at the end of the third quarter, and scored the first points of the fourth quarter to force a continuous clock. A 7-1 Scott City run in the fourth made the final 63-28.

Scott City got a career-high 24 points from Junior Meza, as he connected on six triples, while Avery Radke added 10 points and nine rebounds. The Beavers were 8-11 from the free throw line and committed 12 turnovers. Hutchinson Trinity was led by Beau Towell’s eight points, as they were 4-5 from the foul line and finished with 22 turnovers.

It was the second straight year the teams met up with Scott City winning both games. The Beavers picked up their first third-place finish in three tries.

Girls scores on Friday saw Lyons defeat Hutch Trinity 50-41 for seventh, Smoky Valley knock off Kingman for fifth place 43-38, and Southeast of Saline win their first ever Sterling Invitational Tournament title with a 43-21 win over Hugoton.

Boys scores on Friday saw SE of Saline knock off Kingman for seventh 54-48, Smoky Valley outlasted Lyons in overtime 63-54, and Sterling defeat Hugoton in the championship game with a 78-55 victory.

Scott City will host Goodland on Tuesday, Colby on Thursday and visit Hugoton on Friday.
