Scott City swept at home by Hoisington
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers opened the 2025-26 basketball season at home against the Hoisington Cardinals on Friday night inside the Scott Community Events Center. It would be a tough night for the Beavers, as the girls would fall 48-39, and the boys dropped a decision 62-55.
Hoisington Girls 48, Scott City 39
Scott City led for all but the last two seconds of the first half. The Lady Beavers jumped out early to an 11-0 lead and led 13-4 after the first quarter of play. They would have the first of their two long scoring droughts in the first half come in the first and second quarters, as their first drought went for nearly seven minutes. However, Hoisington (1-0) scored only five points during that time. After Scott City took a 15-8 lead with 3:56 left before halftime, the Lady Cardinals closed the half on a 12-4 run, capped off with a three with two seconds left to give them a 20-19 lead. The Lady Beavers would find ways to get the lead back, with the first coming at 22-20 early in the second half, and 30-27 with 1:08 remaining in the third period. That’s when Scott City (0-1) went on their second long scoring drought of the game. The Lady Beavers would go on a drought of five and a half minutes, and Hoisington used a 13-2 run to lead 40-32 with 2:31 left. A mini run got Scott City within 42-39 late, but the Lady Cardinals would salt the game away at the foul line to preserve a 48-39 win.
Leading the wya for Hoisington was Laeya Beck wiht 18 points, and Tianna Lutters added 10 points. The Lady Cardinals went 15-21 from the line, including going 10-12 in the final period, and had 28 turnovers unofficially. Scott City got 14 from Piper Fox and a career-high 10 from Peyton Gentry. The Lady Beavers were 9-18 from the foul line and committed 22 turnovers.
Hoisington picked up their first win in Scott City since February 2002, when they won 48-45. Scott City leads the series 13-7.

Hoisington Boys 62, Scott City 55
Scott City led for nearly the first three quarters. Once Hoisington took the lead, they never trailed despite a pair of ties. The Beavers came out and led 13-3 late in the first quarter, before a Cardinal run cut the margin in half at 13-8 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Beavers once again had a 10 point lead at 20-10, when Hoisington (1-0) got a three-point play to pull to within seven, as the teams would trade four points for the rest of the half to make it 24-17 at intermission. The third time Scott City (0-1) built a 10-point lead was ealry in the third quarter to lead 27-17. Once again, a Cardinal three pulled them to within seven. The Beavers led 29-29 with 4:59 left in the third stanza, when Hoisington would go on a big run. They used a 20-4 run over a five-minute stretch to lead 40-33 with 7:26 remaining in the game. Scott City would get the game tied on a pair of occasions at 47 all, and the latest at 55-55 with 1:11 left. A three-point play by the Cardinals with 46.7 seconds left ended the momentum, as Hoisington put the game on ice down the stretch and picked up a 62-55 win.
Mason Martin led the way with 26 points for Hoisington and Marcus Ingram poured in a career-high 14 points. The Cardinals went 17-23 from the charity line and had 12 turnovers. Scott City was led by Junior Meza who had a career-high 20 points, while Avery Radke added 16 points, all in the second half. The Beavers were just 4-11 from the foul line and had 11 turnovers.
With the win, Hoisington snaps an eight-game losing streak in the series, and wins in Scott City for the first time since December of 2001, when they won 60-51. The Beavers lead the series 15-5.
