Sen. Moran Applauds President Trump’s Federal Judicial Appointments for Kansas

Washington, D.C.–U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) released the following statement regarding President Trump’s appointment of Jeffrey Kuhlman, Tony Mattivi and Anthony Powell to fill vacancies on the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas:
“I applaud President Trump’s appointment of Jeffrey Kuhlman, Tony Mattivi and Anthony Powell, dedicated public servants whom I was pleased to recommend for the United States District Court for the District of Kansas.After a lengthy process where I had the opportunity to meet with many qualified candidates who expressed interest in serving on the bench, these individuals stood out for their deep commitment to serving Kansas and our country, pursuing justice and upholding the rule of law. I am grateful for the President’s confidence in these candidates, and I look forward to their confirmation process in the Senate.”
Jeffrey Kuhlman is a partner at Watkins Calcara, Chtd., a law firm in Great Bend. He previously served as a judicial law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Eric F. Melgren in Wichita and, prior to that, he worked as an attorney at Hinkle Law Firm. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history, with a minor in political science, from Kansas State University and graduated cum laude with a law degree from Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University.
Tony Mattivi was appointed to serve as the Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) in 2022. He previously worked as vice president and general counsel for MedCor. Prior to this, he was a federal prosecutor, serving as an assistant U.S. attorney for Kansas from 1998 to 2020. In this role, he prosecuted a number of high-profile cases and led the U.S. Department of Justice team that convicted three Kansas militia members who plotted an attack on Somali Muslim refugees in Garden City. He is a graduate of Metropolitan State University and holds a law degree from Washburn University School of Law.
Anthony Powell has served as the Kansas Solicitor General since his appointment in 2022. He previously served as a judge for the Eighteenth Judicial District, where he served Sedgwick County from 2002 until he was appointed to the Kansas Court of Appeals in 2013. Prior to that, he was a member of the Kansas House of Representatives for eight years, where he served as Majority Whip. He practiced at Martin & Churchill in Wichita and previously worked for Congressman William Broomfield and Senator Bob Dole. He earned his undergraduate degree from George Washington University and his law degree from Washburn University School of Law.
