Syracuse, South Gray and Elkhart take home top three trophies

Wednesday wrapped up the state golf tournaments across the state of Kansas. It would be a good day for the area, as there would be 13 medalists spread out. One would become a state champion, as South Gray’s Gavin Wahl took the title in Class 1A in Dodge City.

Class 6A, Quail Ridge Golf Course, Winfield
Shawnee Mission East would take the Class 6A title by two shots over Blue Valley North. Manhattan would tie Blue Valley for third. One area golfer would medal, as Maddix Shook wrapped up his career with an 18th place finish. Dodge City’s AJ Peters and Aidan Robinson would tie for 28th. Dodge City placed 10th and Garden City was 12th as a team, but did not make the top six to advance to the second day.

Class 4A, Sand Creek Station Golf Course, Newton
Hugoton’s Lane Stand would finish in 57th in the first day at Class 4A in Newton. He would not make the cut to advance to Wednesday.

Class 3A, Buffalo Dunes, Garden City
Wichita Collegiate would take the Class 3A title at nearby Buffalo Dunes, holding off fellow city opponent Wichita Trinity Academy by five shots, while Sabetha was third. Scott City’s Jackson Rumford would become a four-time medalist for the Beavers, as he finished in a tie for sixth overall. Lakin’s Noah Richter just missed the top 20 with a three-way tie for 21st. Luke Thyne from Holcomb missed the cut for the second day, as he finished in a tie for 39th after the first day.

Class 2A, Turkey Creek Golf Course, McPherson
Syracuse led after the first day, and would settle for a state runner-up finish in McPherson. Sacred Heart won the meet with a score of 611 and Hoxie finished third. The Bulldogs got a fifth place finish from Charlie Keller and Brody Keller finished in a tie for ninth, while Johnny TeVelde was 15th and Jarrett Scott tied for 18th for the Bulldogs.

Class 1A, Mariah Hills Golf Course, Dodge City
Hutch Central Christian finished as the state champion in Dodge City, while South Gray finished second and Elkhart was third. South Gray’s Gavin Wahl won the state title, with a two-day score of 136, while Bode Higgins of Elkhart was second with a 145. South Gray’s Cameron Wahl tied for third and Cord Kellenberger from Ashland tied for fifth. Eklhart’s Murray Houtz tied for eighth and Gavin Schumacher was 20th for the Wildcats. Lincoln Shafer for Greeley County tied for 12th.
