Scott City Routs Ulysses

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City scored on four of their first five first half possesions, as they built up a 20-0 first quarter lead, on their way to a 49-13 win over the Ulysses Tigers on Homecoming night at Darner Field.

After holding the Tigers on fourth-and-one at the Ulysses 44, Scott City wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. A four play, 44-yard drive in only 58 seconds was capped off by a 12-yard run by Brenner Wells. Brett O’Neil’s extra point made it 7-0 with 8:58 remaining in the opening quarter. On their second possession, the Beavers used a double pass for their second score. Brett O’Neil threw a backward pass to his brother Trey, who found tight end Drew Kite in stride for a 38-yard touchdown with 6:37 to go in the opening quarter. Brett’s point after attempt made it 14-0. One more Scott City score would take place in the opening quarter on a four-yard scoring run by Tyler Hess to make it 20-0 with 3:07 remaining in period one.

The second quarter saw the Beavers score through the air again. Brett O’Neil hooked up with Drew Kite from 13 yards out with 6:46 to go in the first half. After a missed two-point conversion, Scott City led 26-0. Ulysses would score their lone points of the half on special teams. Eric Acosta blocked the Brett O’Neil punt and would take it 30 yards to paydirt. Jorge Mendez’ extra point kick made it 26-7 Beavers with 6:46 left before recess. Scott City’s last score of the half came at the 4:18 mark of the second quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Brett O’Neil to make it 29-7 at the break.

Dalton Buehler would squash any idea of a Ulysses comeback with an 82-yard kickoff to begin the second half, before he was tackled at the Tiger three. Buehler would score on a three-yard run on the next play to make it 32-7 15 seconds into the second half. Five minutes later, Brett O’Neil found his brother Trey on a fly pattern into the end zone from 17 yards out. Going into the final quarter, it was 43-7 Beavers.

In the final quarter, Paco Banda scored on a 10-yard run with 9:23 remaining to make it 49-7 Scott City, and the running clock was on. With both teams having substitutions on the field late, Ulysses scored with 49 seconds remaining on a Tregg Rodriguez one-yard run to make the final 49-13.

For the game, Dalton Buehler rushed for 94 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown run. Brett O’Neil had two touchdown passes, and Drew Kite had two receiving scores, one each from Brett and Trey O’Neil. Ulysses was led by Alec Meirhoff, who passed for 70 yards, and rushed for 12 yards.

Scott City (4-0, 3-0 GWAC) will travel to Hugoton Friday, while Ulysses (2-2, 1-1) visits Goodland Friday.
