E. Gevene Sutton

E. Gevene Sutton, 97, passed away January 17, 2016 at Country Living in Ellinwood. Geneve was born on March 29, 1918 in Smith County, Kansas to Elmer and Lula (Nichols) Gardner. 

In 1925 the family moved to a farm 7 miles south of Ensign, Kansas. Gevene graduated from Ensign Rural High School in 1936. She attended the school reunion in 2014 as the oldest living graduate. Gevene received Christ as her savior at a young age and was dear to her all of her life.  

Geneve married the love of her life, Caleb Sutton on October 21, 1938 at Bucklin, Kansas. Gevene and Caleb engaged in farming and ranching south of Ensign. Gevene loved reading, and she enjoyed gardening and canning as well as cooking. She was a wonderful cook. Gevene was an active member of the Free Methodist Church and later the Ensign Methodist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. She published the newsletter for the Free Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Cave Homemakers Club. Gevene also worked for Vera Waters textile business in Dodge City, Kansas. 

Gevene is survived by her children, Marie and Dick Waters, Ellinwood,Wanda Zortman, Great Bend, Steve and Pam Sutton, Larned and Martin Menzor, Ensign, grandchildren Duane and Robin Waters, Mark Waters, Herbie Zortman, Galen Zortman, Chuck Zortman, Shon Sutton, Dallis Aaron, Bobby Jo Debois, Sarah King and Stephenie Howard, sisters, Ardith Hansen, Penalosa, Eunice Padgett, Fowler, numerous great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Lula Gardner, her husband, Caleb Sutton, son Timmy Esplund, brothers Carol Gardner, Oral Gardner, sister Grace Wegley and special sister-in-law Katherine Sutton. 

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Bradley McCoy presiding. Burial will follow at Cave Cemetery south of Ensign. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 from noon to 8:00 PM.
