Yakel tosses perfect game in Broncs walk-off over Scott City

Lakin, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a game that lasted just over an hour, it took only one run to win Tuesday’s game between Scott City and Lakin. Despite a fairly strong wind from the north, both teams played solid defense to back up their starting pitchers. In the end, the Broncs took advantage of a lead-off error in the seventh to win 1-0 over the Beavers in what was supposed to be a complete doubleheader.

Ryder Yakel was dominant on the mound for Lakin. Yakel did not allow a Scott City base runner, and had 11 strikeouts to complete the perfect game for the Broncs. His dominance on the mound was proven in the fact that he did not have a pitch count past two balls and two strikes. As for the Lakin offense, it was the bottom part of the order that was the most productive.

Scott City starter Gustavo Gonzalez had his best outing of the season by far. Gonzalez allowed only three hits in 6 2/3 innings and only walked one batter and struck out two.

The game’s lone run came on a full count for Khai Hernandez, who singled to drive in Hunter Kirby for the game’s lone win. Kirby reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Game two of the doubleheader was suspended right before the top of the third inning, due to the strong winds and dust storm that invaded Lakin. The Broncs were leading Scott City 6-0. No date to resume the game has been announced.

Scott City is 0-5 on the year, and will head to Holcomb on Friday, while Lakin is 4-1, and travel to Elkhart next Monday.
