Gillen steps down as Lady Eagles Coach

Hugoton, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–There is no doubt that the Hugoton Lady Eagles basketball team has had one of the best, if not the best run for any school in southwest Kansas over the last few years. The leader of that run will be stepping down from his post.

After five years, Andy Gillen is resigning as head coach of the Hugoton Lady Eagles. In those five seasons under Gillen, the Lady Eagles were 107-14, that included three consecutive GWAC titles, four straight state tournament appearances, and two state champion teams. His Great West Activities Conference record was 45-5, as they won their last 30 league games. In the 2016-17 season, Hugoton went a school-record 26-0, en route to the Class 3A State Title in Hutchinson. The Lady Eagles reached the sub-state championship game in each of Gillen’s five seasons.

Gilllen also won a state championship in 2010 with the South Gray Lady Rebels in Class 1A, as they went 26-0 in the final year before the classification was split.
