Rivalry renewed; Scott City visits Ulysses

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It usually doesn’t matter what the records are when Scott City and Ulysses battle on the gridiron. You expect a hard-fought, physical game whenever the Beavers and Tigers do battle. Tonight at Maxwell Field, Scott City enters Ulysses in a matchup that features a pair of teams on the opposite end of the win-loss column.

Scott City pushed their record to 4-0 on the year, and 2-0 in the GWAC, following a 35-7 homecoming win against Hugoton last Friday night at Darner Field. The Beavers led 28-0 after the first quarter, and would trade touchdowns with the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Parker Gooden threw for a career-best 161 yards and four touchdowns, three of them to Marshal Faurot in the win. Faurot has five of Scott City’s six receiving touchdowns on the year. They rolled up a season-best 421 yards of offense, while holding Hugoton to a season-low 72 yards of offense. So far this year, Scott City has average 30.3 points, while giving up just nine, and have outgained their opponents by a margin of 312-141. In fact, only one team has gained over 200 yards on the Beavers through four games.

Ulysses is looking to pick themselves off the mat, following a 51-8 loss at Colby last Friday night at Dennen Field. The Tigers are 0-4 on the year and 0-3 in GWAC play. They’ve lost five straight, dating back to last season. In last weeks loss, Ulysses trailed 37-0 at the break, giving up 29 of those points in the second quarter, and finished with 166 yards of offense, while giving up 458. Zak Anderson has converted from quarterback to running back, and leads the ground game with four rushing touchdowns on the year, while Andrew Nagel leads the Tigers in rushing with 196. The Tigers average around 10 points a game and 203 yards of offense, and are giving up 30 points and 309 yards of offense on average through four games.

Tonight is the 70th meeting in the series, with Scott City holding a 38-30-1 record. The Beavers have won nine of the last 11 in the series and won 53-7 last year in Scott City. Ulysses last won against the Beavers in 2013 25-6. Both teams have faced off every year since 1956.
