Scott City softball sweeps Elkhart

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s been tough for the Scott City softball team to get games in this spring. With only two doubleheaders in and two that have been called off, the Lady Beavers were able to hit the field on Monday at home against Elkhart. When they have taken the field, they have been the dominant in their first six games. On their home field, the completed their third doubleheader sweep of the season in a 13-1 win in game one, followed up by an 11-6 game two win

Scott City 13, Elkhart 1, Game 1 (4 1/2 innings)
The Lady Beavers would strike early and often, putting up three first inning runs, two coming on RBI ground outs by Macie Price and Gabby Martinez. They added two more in the second to make it 5-0, on a two-run double by Lyndi Rumford. Scott City would blow the game wide open in the third with a seven-run inning, capped off by a Price two-run double. Elkhart’s lone run came in the fourth inning, when Micah Hall singled in Whitney Jimerson to make it 14-1. Amanda Lara would add another run for the Lady Beavers in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single, as Scott City was able to retire the side to win 13-1.

Amanda Lara had three hits to lead Scott City and drove in two runs, while Macie Price drove in three and went 2-3 at the plate. The Lady Beavers had 13 hits in the game and played error-free. Kaitlyn Roberts threw only 54 pitches in five innings to pick up the win, giving up a run on three hits with two strikeouts. Whitney Jimerson had two of Elkhart’s three hits and scored their only run. Kylee Richardson took the loss, allowing 13 runs, nine earned, on three hits.

Scott City 11, Elkhart 6, Game 2
Scott City picked up from where they left off in the first game, scoring three first inning runs. Kaitlyn Roberts had a triple, then advanced home on a throw into the infield on the next play after Lyndi Rumford’s RBI groundout that scored Bailey Latta. Macie Price would score the third run on a passed ball. In the second inning, Scott City added a pair of runs to take a 5-0 lead. The Lady Wildcats scored their first run in the third inning on a double steal, as Taylor Wares crossed home to cut the martin to 5-1. Just like the first game, the Lady Beavers would have a big third inning in the second game. Scott City added four runs, highlighted by a Latta two-run double that scored Amanda Lara and Shelby Patton. After the Lady Beavers scored another run in the fourth, Elkhart would find a groove in the fifth in an attempt to battle back. They scored a run in the fifth, and added two more in the sixth to pull to within 10-4. Hailey Carrillo had a two-run single in that inning, as the Lady Wildcats took advantage of two Scott City errors. The Lady Beavers added a run in the bottom of the sixth, and Elkhart added two more runs in their last at bat, as Scott City prevailed 11-6. It was the first time in six games this year that the Lady Beavers have played a full game.

Kaitlyn Roberts went all seven innings in game two, giving up six runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts. Macie Price had four hits and scored four runs, while Bailey Latta added three hits and drove in two runs. Chevelle Ralstin took the loss for Elkhart, going 2 2/3 innings, giving up nine runs, five earned, on nine hits. Kylee Richardson gave up two runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Sabrina Mathies and Chantry Hoskinson had three hits each for the Lady Wildcats.

Scott City is 6-0 on the season, and is slated to host Holcomb on Friday. Elkhart dropped to 4-4 on the season and will host Cimarron on Thursday. It is Cimarron’s first year of having a softball program.
