Scott City girls, Hugoton boys win GWAC team titles

Ulysses, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was the final tuneup for the runners at the 2018 Great West Activities Conference meet in Ulysses on Thursday afternoon at Bentwood Golf Course. On a bitterly cold afternoon, it was the Scott City girls and the Hugoton boys took home the league championships.

On the girls side, the Scott City girls would repeat as GWAC champions, as five of their seven runners finished in the top eight. They were led by freshman Clare Hawkins, followed by Dulce Ayala, Piper Wasinger and Megan Vance, who finished second through fifth in the league. The Lady Beavers topped runner-up Colby by 31 points. Hugoton would put two in the top 10 and finish in third with Rebecca Johnson and Frances Gaskill going ninth and 10th respectively, and Ulysses was in fourth with Yessenia Ornelas being their top runner coming in seventh.

In a boys race, it was the slimmest of margins for the team title. While Hugoton and Scott City finished with 45 points, it would be come down to a tiebreaker. Hugoton would win the tiebreaker, and stay at the top of the GWAC for the ninth straight year. Ulysses was in third with 67 points and Holcomb finished fourth with 81 points. Jacob Eckert would take the league individual title, while Scott City would take three of the next four spots, led by Eric Frances who was second, Theron Tucker was third, and Jaxson Kough was fifth. Holcomb was led by Alex Rodby, who finished fourth and Garret Winner led the Tigers with a sixth place finish.

Next week is regionals for all six GWAC teams. Colby, Goodland and Scott City head to the Class 3A, Southeast of Saline regional, Holcomb and Hugoton will go to the Class 3A regional hosted by Bishop Carroll, and Ulysses heads to Class 4A Regional at Buhler on Saturday, October 20.
