Scott City sees split results on Friday night

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City basketball teams played host to opponents from Wichita on Friday night at Scott Community Events Center, as the Lady Beavers took on Wichita Trinity, while the boys faced Life Prep. It would be a split for Scott City, as the girls picked up a 57-52 win, while the boys fell 58-47.

The Lady Knights entered winless on the year, but put up their best fight, giving Scott City a scare. Wichita Trinity led 14-9 after the first quarter, and led by eight early in the second, before the Lady Beavers were finally able to get rid of their cold shooting. They closed the half with seven of the final nine points to tie the game at 25. A Lady Knight basket gave them the early lead to begin the second half, only to see Scott City rally with a 9-3 run to lead 31-27 midway through the third frame. The Lady Beavers led 40-32 late in the third quarter, and saw Wichita trinity pull to within 42-41 with 6:16 left in the game. Scott City would not trail the rest of the night, and led by seven with 1:23 left at 53-46, and held on for the 57-52 win.

Erika Felker poured in a career-high 17 points for Scott City while Amber Latta had 13 and Brooke Strine finished with 12. Wichita Trinity was led by Aubrey Winter with 13 points, and Tara Wills had 12.

With the win, Scott City improved to 2-7 all time against Wichita Trinity, and is 4-0 for the second time in three years.

Life Prep Boys 58, Scott City 47
This was a game where Scott City led for most of the night, but saw Life Prep pull away in the fourth. Scott City used a 13-2 run to build a 15-6 lead with a little over a minute left in the opening stanza. Life Prep rallied with a 14-3 run to lead midway through the second quarter at 20-18. In a half with runs, the Beavers closed out the final 3:41 on a 11-4 run to lead 29-24 at the break. The Beavers were unable to much offense going in the second half, as the Fire raced out to a 33-31 lead with 3:32 in the third quarter, thanks in part to a 9-2 run. Scott City scored the next four to take the lead, only to see Life Prep bury a pair of threes in the final minute to take a 39-35 lead into the fourth quarter. The Beavers were unable to get any closer than two, with the last coming at 47-45 with 3:45 remaining. Life Prep closed the game out on an 11-2 run to pull away for the 58-47 win.

The Fire were led by Isaiah Braynen with 22 points, while Scott City got 11 from Lawson Bailey and 10 from Ronnie Weathers.

Life Prep, formerly known as Wichita Word of Life, now leads the series with Scott City 2-1. It was the first meeting since 2012, when Scott City won 56-45 at home.
