Lady Demon defense falters in 57-50 loss to Great Bend

DODGE CITY–Dodge City allowed a season-high 57 points Tuesday, and Great Bend controlled the tempo to end an 11-game losing streak against the Lady Demons, winning 57-50 at Dodge City’s Fieldhouse.

The two teams battled back and forth, and at times, traded buckets throughout the contest. Great Bend started the game on a 7-0 run, but Dodge City quickly responded with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the score at the end of the first quarter.

From there, the Lady Panthers seized a seven-point lead at halftime, which whittled down to one at the end of the third.

There were eight lead changes, the bulk of which happened early in the fourth quarter, but ultimately, it was a late 12-2 run that pushed the Lady Panthers over the top for the win.

The Lady Panthers shot better than 51% as a team, led by Mersadie Spray’s 21 points on 6-of-11 from the field and 7-for-10 on free throws.

Becca Unruh scored 22 points for Dodge City, including a blistering 6-for-10 from the three-point line, but Great Bend used a box-and-one defense to slow her down and hold her scoreless in the final frame.

The Lady Demons fall to 4-6 (1-1 WAC) with the loss and return to action next Thursday when they travel to McPherson’s Roundhouse for the Mid American Classic. The tournament bracket is set to be released Wednesday morning.
