DODGE CITY–Mekhi Cameron scored 23 points for Cowley’s men Saturday, who never trailed in a 79-74 upset win at No. 11 Dodge City, while the 13th-ranked Conq women rolled the Tigers 108-74 in a doubleheader at the Student Activity Center.
In the men’s game, Cowley built a 19-point lead early in the second half and kept the Conqs at an arm’s length the rest of the contest.
Mekhi Cameron and Jeff Nwankwo combined for 43 points for the Tigers and six of the team’s 10 threes in the game.
Dodge City made just 6-of-24 from behind the arc and committed 16 turnovers. The Conqs were led in scoring by DJ Jones, who posted 22, Jason Edwards, who scored 21 and Chris Robinson, who finished with 16.
The No. 11 Conquistadors fall to 14-5 (10-3 KJCCC) with the loss and return to action Wednesday when they travel to No. 16 Coffeyville. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.
In the women’s game, Dodge City raced out of the gate to a 22-5 lead and never looked back in a near-wire-to-wire win.
Five Conqs scored in double figures, headlined by Jenna Rose Mafua’s 20-point effort. Hanna Miller scored a career-high 17 points, Bree Stephens 16, Georgia Gray 13 and Paris Santacaterina 12. Jada Burton tallied a near-double-double with 8 points and 10 assists.
Dodge City shot a blistering 13-for-26 from distance and better than 60% overall from the field. They also outscored Cowley 58-22 in the paint.
108 points marked a season high for the Conqs.
The No. 13 Conquistadors improve to 17-2 (12-1 KJCCC) with the win and return to action Wednesday when they travel to Coffeyville. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
