Lady Longhorns advance in sub-state play

Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Holcomb Lady Longhorns win for the second time over the Lakin Lady Broncs 65-48 at home Monday night in round one of sub-state.

Holcomb jumped out to a 14-5 lead with five minutes left in the first quarter, but Lakin responded, going on a 6-3 run to close out the quarter and be down just 17-11 to start the second quarter. The Lady Longhorns would get it back to a nine-point lead at 23-14 with six minutes left in the second quarter. Another long scoring drought for Holcomb did not allow them a chance to stretch the lead. The Lady Longhorns would take a 32-25 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, the Lady Broncs came out and cut the lead to four points at 34-30 with six minutes left in the quarter. Holcomb responded and went on a 8-0 run in just under two minutes to be up 42-30 with 4:15 left in the third quarter. They would continue to control the game and be up 48-37 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Longhorns would keep the pedal down and stretch it to a 62-43 lead with just under four minutes to go in the game. Holcomb cruised from there and won 65-48 over Lakin.

Lakin shot 6-15 from three-point, 11-32 from inside, and 8-12 from the free-throw line. The Lady Broncs had 28 rebounds, 13 of those were offensive boards. They had 18 turnovers.

Lakin was led by Sara Wright with seven points, Samantha Vogel with 11 points and nine rebounds, and Jara Davidson with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Holcomb shot 10-25 from three-point, 13-34 from inside, and 9-14 from the free throw line. The Lady Longhorns had 25 rebounds, 12 of those were offensive boards. They had eight turnovers.

Holcomb was led by Kalyn King with 13 points, with three, three’s, Jera Kruleski with 16 points and eight rebounds, and Halle Jones with 24 points, with four, three’s and six rebounds.

Holcomb moves to 13-8 on the season and will face Goodland on Thursday at 7:30 pm in round two of sub-state. Lakin ends their season at 12-9.
