Scott City blasts Goodland
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On the coldest night of the football season, the Scott City Beavers made the venture to Goodland to face the Cowboys with an opportunity to seal the Class 3A, District 8 title.
Scott City would score on six of their eight first half possessions, en route to a 58-14 win at Cowboy Stadium to win their second consecutive district title.
The Beavers used a six-play, 61-yard drive to get on the board, as Collin McDaniel on third down scored from 29 yards out to go up 7-0 after the Jackson Rumford PAT with 8:43 left in the opening quarter. Their second possession ended in a fumble at the Cowboy three yard line, and following Goodland’s third straight three-and-out, it took one play for Scott City to score. Avry Noll rushed it in from 58 yards out with 4:53 left in the opening frame to push the lead to 14-0. The Beavers scored one more time in the first quarter, on a 27-yard Noll run to extend the lead to 21-0 after the opening frame.
Scott City added three more touchdowns in the second quarter. Their first of the period came through the air, as Camden Vulgamore connected with McDaniel on a 45-yard pass play with 5:44 left before halftime, as Rumford’s extra point made it 28-0. In the final two minutes, the Beavers cashed in two more times. Their first score came on a six-play, 47-yard drive, as McDaniel would rush it in from three yards out to extend the lead to 35-0 with 1:49 left before halftime. Three plays following an interception, it was the second Vulgamore to McDaniel scoring conversion, this time from 20 yards out with 33.1 seconds before halftime to push the lead to 42-0 with the Rumford extra point.
To open the second half, Scott City put together a five-play, 50-yard drive, as Noll fund the end zone for the third time, with a 16-yard run with 9:31 left in the third quarter to make it 49-0. The second score of the third came from sophomore quarterback Peyton Bergner. Bergner intercepted a Cowboy pass and took it to the Goodland 25. Two plays later, he scored from 20 yards outh with 8:26 remaining in the third to extend the lead to 55-0. The extra point was blocked. Following a Griffin Edwards interception, Scott City’s final points came on special teams. Jackson Rumford booted in a career-long 39-yard field goal with 5:25 left in the third to make it 58-0 Beavers.
Goodland got on the board, using a fake punt to convert a first down. Later in their scoring drive, it was Zach Thorson hooking up with Linkon Cure from 16 yards out to make it 58-6 with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter. Cure would make an Odell Beckham-like catch in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion to make it 58-8. The Cowboys recovered the onside kick and got the final points of the night in the fourth quarter. With 11:11 left it was Thorson to Cure on a 29-yard pass play to make it 58-14, as the two-point conversion was no good.
On the night, the Beavers rung up 553 yards of offense. Camden Vulgamore was 10-11 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Collin McDaniel had 97 receiving yards on three catches and two touchdowns, and also rushed for two touchdowns and 95 yards. Avry Noll rushed for a career-best 147 yards on seven carries and three touchdowns. Scott City gained 353 yards on the ground.
Goodland saw Zach Thorson go 15-29 for 148 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Linkon Cure hauled in 9 catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns. The Cowboys had minus-40 yards rushing.
With the win, Scott City has won 20 consecutive in the series, including 12 straight in Goodland. They lead the series 41-11. Scott City’s win also saw them pick up their 23rd district championship in program history, and their second consecutive district title.
At 6-1 overall and 3-0 in district play, Scott City plays host to Colby next Friday night to wrap up the regular season. The Eagles are now 4-0 overall, 1-2 in district play, after they picked up a 20-14 road win at Lakin on Friday. Goodland falls to 1-6 overall, 0-3 in district play, as they wrap up their regular season at Hugoton on Friday. The Eagles fell to Holcomb 21-13 to fall to 5-2 overall, and 1-2 in district play.
