Girls tennis state results; Cimarron’s Goetz placed 8th

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The state tennis meets took place across four sites on Friday and Saturday, as several area schools were represented in three of the meets. 

There would be one state placer from the area, as senior Emily Goetz from Cimarron finished eighth in the Class 3-2-1A meet in Topeka. 

In Class 6A in Junction City, there were no area state placers, as Garden City had six players and Dodge City had five players competing at state. Starting off with the Red Demons, Elle Bunkall would go 0-2 at Singles, falling in her first match 6-0, 6-0, and lost her consolation match 8-3. The Doubles team of Nila Alvarado/Charlotte Wagner would go 0-2, falling to the evenual ninth place team 6-2, 6-0, and lost their consolation match 8-1. The second doubles team of Jana Calderon/Stephany Hernandez went 0-2 on Friday, dropping their first match 6-0, 6-0, and their consolation first round match 8-0. 
For Garden City, they would see Danica Galia go 2-2. She would win her opening match 6-4, 6-1, before falling to the eventual state champion 6-1, 6-0. Galia won her first consolation match 8-4, and lost in the next round 8-1, falling one match shy of a top 12 placing. Quincy Nanninga won her opening round match 6-3, 6-0, and lost her second round match 6-3, 6-0. She would drop her consolation match 8-3. Garden City’s Doubles team of Jocelyn Kennedy/Chloe Ptacek would fall one match short of placing, as they won their first round match 6-3, 6-2, and lost their second round match 6-0, 6-2. They won their first consolation match 8-3, but lost their next match 8-6.
Garden City scored five points and tied for 11th. Shawnee Mission East was the state champion with 53 points, while Blue Valley West was second with 35 points and Olathe Northwest was third with 32 points.

In Class 4A in Winfield, Scott City and Ulysses would be represented there. For Scott City, Malorie Cupp went 1-2. She would win her first match 6-3, 6-3, before dropping her second match 6-3, 6-0 to the eventual state runner up. In her consolation match, Cupp fell 8-0. The Doubles team of Madison Roberts/Tatum Wells went 0-2, losing their opening match 6-4, 6-1, and lost their consolation match 8-0. Ulysses’ Clarissa Sianuqui went 0-2 on Friday, losing her opening match 6-0, 6-0, and fell in her consolation match 8-5.
Independence won the state title with 37 points, while McPherson was second with 28 and Bishop Miege was third with 24 points.

At the Class 3-2-1A State meet in Topeka, Cimarron would have a Singles player and a Doubles team. Emily Goetz would place eighth. She had a bye in the first round, and won her first match of the day 6-1, 6-4, before losing her quarterfinal match to eventual state champion 6-2, 6-2. Goetz won her next match 8-2, and lost her next match 8-1. Goetz lost her seventh place match 8-3. The Doubles team of Kiera Bucholz/Zoey Jantz dropped their opening round match 7-5, 6-0, and lost their consolation first round match 8-3. 
Cimarron placed 11th as a team with seven points. Wichita Collegiate was the state champion with 50 points, while Marysville was second with 28 points and Conway Springs was third with 25 points.
