Andale ends Scott City’s season

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a battle of 8-1 teams, Scott City played host to Andale in the Regional round of the Class 3A playoffs at Darner Field. The Indians entered winning the last four Class 3A State titles. It didn’t take long for them to show that the run to Hutchinson still runs through them. Andale returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown to set the tone, and never looked back in a 44-8 win over the Beavers to advance to the Sectional round of the playoffs for a seventh straight year.

The opening kickoff saw Sam Harp return the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown to go up 6-0 with 11:46 left in the first quarter. Harp would connect with Hunter Grimes for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0. It would be the Andale’s 4th kick off return for a touchdown this year. Scott City would punt on thier first drive, and the Indians would go back to work and score on their next possession. An 11-play drive was capped off on a Gage Prosser five-yard run with 3:58 left in the opening period to go up 14-0, afer the missed two-point conversion. The Indians gained 18 yards on third and 20, and converted a fourth down on the drive.

Andale scored on a nine-play drive that covered 89 yards. Because their first two quarterbacks went out due to injuries, Hunter Grimes filled in at quarterback, and scored from a yard out with 9:53 left in the half to extend the lead to 20-0 after the missed two-point conversion. Following a Scott City turnover, the Indians burned nearly half the second quarter clock on a 10-play drive. On third and 27 from the Beaver 31, Grimes found tight end Bo Kaiser near the goal line for a touchdown pass, and Grimes would run in the two-point conversion to make it 28-0 with 3:37 left before intermission.

Scott City’s opening drive of the second half burned nearly five minutes of the second half, but ended with an interception. Andale would punt after moving the ball to their own 31. Two plays following a Beaver turnover on downs at midfield, Rylan White went around the left side and sprinted down the field for a 52-yard touchdown run with 37.9 left in the third frame to extend the Indian lead to 36-0, with the Grimes run.

Both teams scored once in the fourth quarter. Andale pushed their lead to 44-0 with 7:17 left on a White three-yard run, and he would run in the two-point conversion. Scott City would get on the board with two minutes left on a Collin McDaniel eight-yard run, and Camden Vulgamore ran in the two point conversion to make it 44-8.

Andale would finish with 290 yards on the ground, and were led by Owen Eck’s 87 yards on nine carries, before he went out with an injury in the second quarter. Eck passed for 35 yards in the game as well. Hunter Grimes passed for 41 yards on 3-4 passing with a touchdown pass to Bo Kaiser, who was the leading receiver with 38 yards on two receptions. The Indians had 366 yards of offense.

Scott City, who had minus-three yards in the first half of offense, ended up with 187 yards total. Collin McDaniel had 101 yards on 16 carries in his final game as a Beaver. Camden Vulgamore threw for 93 yards on 10-16 passing with three interceptions, as the Beavers rushed for 94 yards total. Jackson Rumford had six receptions for 56 yards.

Both teams combined for 26 accepted penalties, with 14 on Scott City and 12 on Andale.

With the win, Andale has won their 22nd consecutive playoff game since 2019, and now lead the series 2-1 over Scott City. This was the first time the Beavers hosted in the series. It was the most points allowed by Scott City since 2021, when they surrendered 44 points at Colby in a loss. The Beavers are now 55-24 in the playoffs and 18-7 in the Regional round, as they wrapped up their 28th playoff appearance.

Scott City ends their season at 8-2 for the second straight year. Andale improves to 9-1 on the year, as they will host Wichita Collegiate next Friday in the Sectional round of the Class 3A Playoffs. The Spartans are 9-1, following a 42-28 win over Rock Creek. Andale defeated Collegiate 28-7 on October 6.
