Sterling, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After surviving a pair of delays to the tournament earlier in the week, Scott City was able to take the court in Sterling on Thursday, as the Beaver basketball teams faced Kingman in the opening round. It would be a pair of convincing wins for Scott City, as the Lady Beavers picked up a 60-37 win, while the boys won 65-47.

Scott City dominated the first half, using their defense to their advantage. In fact, they would score 27 points, before the Lady Eagles would get on the board with 4:54 left in the half. The Lady Beavers would take a lead of 33-12 at the break. Kingman (1-8) started hitting their shots and made a rally with seven of the first 10 points of the second half to get to within 36-19 with 5:23 left in the third quarter. The deficit was trimmed to 43-27, before the Beavers would take a 47-30 lead into the final frame. Scott City (5-4) would slow down the Lady Eagles in the final quarter, and pick up the 60-37 win.

Erika Felker tied a season-high with 15 points to lead Scott City, while Megan Trout added 13 and Avery Lewis had 11. Kingman was led by Kinslie McDorman with 12 points.

With the win, Scott City improves to 3-0 all-time in the series, as the teams met in the opening round a year ago. The Lady Beavers are guaranteed a top-four finish for a fourth straight year in the tournament

Scott City Boys 65, Kingman 47
The game belonged to the Beavers, despite trailing early on 2-0. A 12-2 run would open things up in the first quarter, and after they saw Kingman pull to within 18-12, Scott City closed out with 10 straight to lead 28-12 after the opening quarter. Both sides were slow scoring in the second frame, as the Beavers would extend their lead to 39-19 at the break. To open the second half, Scott City (7-2) used an 8-3 run to build the lead to 30 at 52-22, and led 54-24 in the third stanza, before taking a 57-32 lead into the final quarter. Kingman (2-7) would score the games final nine points to make the final 65-47.

Scott City was led by Jackson Rufmord with 19 points, while Sage Stoecklein added 17 points and 10 rebounds, as the Beavers saw nine players score. They dominated the glass 34-26. Kingman got a game-high 20 from Chase Webster, as they committed 18 turnovers. 

The series is now tied at 1 game apiece.
