Beaver basketball splits Saturday’s third place games

Sterling, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On the final day of the Sterling Invitational on Saturday, the Scott City basketball teams were in the third place games, as the Lady Beavers faced Sterling, while the boys took on Southeast of Saline. It would be a split result, as the girls dominated Sterling 55-24, while the boys fell 49-47.

The Lady Beavers had not won inside the Gleason Center in their previous three games. They would change that and change that in a big way. Scott City jumped out early at 9-0 before Sterling got on the board. They would limit the Lady Bears to just one field goal in the first quarter, and one more in the second quarter, as they led 15-4 after the first, and used a 15-0 run in the second to lead 32-5 with 2:03 left before halftime. Scott City (6-5) jumped out to a 43-11 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter, and built their lead to 53-19 heading in to the fourth quarter. Sterling (4-7) would outscore the Lady Beavers in the final quarter that saw a continuous clock, as Scott City would win 55-24.

Megan Trout would score a career-high 18 points to lead Scott City, while Erika Felker had 13 and Avery Lewis added 11. The Lady Beavers went 7-15 at the foul line and had 11 turnovers. They outrebounded the Lady Black Bears 36-26. Sterling was led by Aleya Ravenstien with eight points, ans they had 25 turnovers.

It was the third meeting between the schools, as Scott City won their first game against Sterling. It was Scott City’s first third place finish in the tournament, as they wrapped up their fourth season in the Sterling Invitational.

Erika Felker was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Southeast of Saline Boys 49, Scott City 47
This is one that Scott City will feel let an opportunity go away. The Beavers trailed 6-5 early, but used an 8-0 run to lead 13-6 with 2:29 left in the opening quarter. Scott City (7-4) would lead 24-13 with 3:38 left in the first half, when the Trojans scored the next eight points to pull to within 24-21 late in the first half. The Beavers led 29-23 at the break. Southeast of Saline (5-5) scored the first 10 points of the second half to lead 33-29 midway through the third quarter. Scott City would go back and forth with the Trojans and trail 44-37 heading into the final period. Southeast led 44-38 with 4:49 left, when the Beavers responded with four straight to go up 46-45 with 2:38 remaining. However, that would be their last lead. The Trojans socred the next four points and led 49-46 with 50.4 seconds left. Scott City would have a final chance after forcing a turnover late. They were fouled on a three-point shot with .6 left. Unfortunately, the first free throw was missed, the second was made and the third was intentionally missed to try and get a quick tip in to tie, but it was unsuccessful, as the Trojans took a 49-47 win.

Gannon Jacobson led the way four Southeast with 24 poitns, while Owen Bailey added 10. They were 7-11 at the free throw line and had nine turnovers. For Scott City, it was Jackson Rumford who led all scorers with 24 points. He had all 18 of Scott City’s points in the second half, as the Beavers finished with 15 turnovers.

It was third meeting in four years between the two teams, as the Trojans have won all three meetings. Scott City would finish in fourth place for a second consecutive year in the Sterling Invitational Tournament.

Jackson Rumford would be named to the All-Tournament Team, and was also named the the Clair Gleason Most Inspirational Player of the tournament on the boys side.
