Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Both the girls and boys game felt similar on Tuesday night at Hays High School, as the Scott City Beavers faced their lone WAC opponent of the year, taking on the Hays High Indians. Both games would see tight first half’s, but the second half in each game would be dominated by the Indians. The girls game would go in favor of Hays 62-39, while the Indians would take the boys game 49-30

Hays Girls 62, Scott City 39
This would be a tale of two halves for the Lady Beavers. Scott City and Hays went back and forth with five ties and five lead changes in the opening two quarters. The Lady Beavers had hit shooting in the first quarter, hitting four triples in the opening period, and took a 20-16 lead after one quarter. Scott City led 24-18 in the first minute of the second quarter, when Hays (8-5) responded with a 12-3 run over a four-minute stretch and led 30-27 with a little over a minute left before the break. Scott City (8-6) tied it up late in the half on a three-point play at 30. In the second half, the Lady Indians would clamp down on defense and dominate in the paint. They outscored the Lady Beavers 16-2 in the third quarter, including scoring the opening 14 points of the half, to take a 46-32 lead into the final quarter. Scott City was unable to overcome the deficit, as they went on a 10-plus minute field goal drought in the second half. They would produce only three field goals in the second half and nine points, as Hays put up 16 more points in the final frame to make the final 62-39.

Zoe Winter had a career-high with 20 points, while Katie Linenberger added 18 for the Lady Indians, who have won two straight. They were 8-10 from the free throw line. Scott City was led by Kendall Gentry and Avery Lewis with 11 points each, as they were 7-13 from the line. The Lady Beavers saw their three-game winning streak snapped.

Hays has now won four straight in the series and leads the series 5-1.

Hays Boys 49, Scott City 30
While points were at a minimum, especially in the first half, the defenses for both teams were stellar. Hays would use their size and play through the post in the second half to pull away. There were four lead changes and three ties in the game, as the Indians led 10-9 after the first quarter. The Beavers would find their way to the lead at 15-12 with 1:54 left before the break, when Hays (8-5) scored the final four points of the half to take a 16-15 halftime lead. After Scott City (8-6) opened the second half with point, the Indians would use an 18-4 run in the final 6:53 of the third frame to open up a 34-20 lead. Hays led by as many as 19 on a pair of occasions, and would win the game by that margin 49-30. The Beavers were unable to string together a run of more than three points in the second half. 

Dawson Ruder scored 14 of his game-high 17 points in teh second half, while Jack Weimer added 11 points and Kyler Fox had 10. Hays finished just 5-10 from the charity line. Scott City was led by Jackson Rumford with 14 points and Alex Tarango added 11, as the Beavers were 6-9 from the foul line.

The Indians have now won four straight and six of their last seven games, while Scott City has dropped six of their last eight games. Hays has now won five straight in the series, and now lead the series 6-4.
