Scott City splits Thursday night games with Hugoton

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As the season is coming to an end quickly, Scott City and Hugoton met up at the Scott Community Events Center Thursday night in a make up doubleheader from January 5. The night would see a split in the doubleheader, as the Lady Beavers prevailed 58-32, while the Eagle boys pulled away late for a 46-32 win. The games did not count towards the GWAC standings, as the games played January 23 were counted toward the league record.

Scott City Girls 58, Hugoton 34
In their second meeting of the year, the Lady Beavers would score 29 points in each half, while the Lady Eagles scored 17 points in each half. The lead would be exchanged five times in the first five minutes of the game. In the end, it would be dominated by Scott City. Trailing 9-7 midway through the first quarter, the Lady Beavers would respond with 11 straight and eventually used a 15-2 run over a five-minute stretch to lead 22-11 with 5:11 remaining before the break. Hugoton, would try and make things interesting, getting to within 24-17 with 1:21 left before recess. Scott City (10-9) scored the final five points of the half to push their lead to 29-17 at the break. In the second half, the Lady Beavers coasted, building their lead to 42-21 halfway through the third quarter. Hugoton (6-13) did make one final push wiht a 7-2 run late in the third stanza. Scott City built their lead late to 58-32, before settling for a 58-34 win.

Erika Felker and Avery Lewis had 12 points apiece for Scott City, as the Lady Beavers had only eight turnovers on the night. They shot 8-13 from the free throw line. Hugoton got 14 points from Abi Slocum, as the Lady Eagles had 13 turnovers and were 10-16 from the line.

With the win, Scott City swept the season series for the first time since the 2018-19 season, and snapped a three-game losing streak at home to Hugoton. The Lady Eagles lead the series since 1989 29-15. The Lady Beavers hit the 10-win mark for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

Hugoton Boys 46, Scott City 32
The No. 4 team in Class 4A never trailed, but were pushed once again to the end against Scott City. After leading 10-7 after the opening frame, the Eagles came out with a punch to open the second quarter, using a 13-1 run to lead 23-8 midway through the second period. The Beavers would make a run of 12-2 over a four-minute stretch of the second and third quarters to get to within 25-20 in the first minute of the second half. Hugoton (17-2) found a way to work their lead back to eight after the third quarter at 33-25. The Eagle lead would be back to 10 on a pair of occasions in the fourth quarter early on. Scott City (9-10) trailed 37-27 with 4:54 left, and would score five straight to pull to within 37-32 with 3:23 left. Not only would that be the closest they got the rest of the night, it would also be thir last points of the game. Hugoton closed out the game with nine straight to make the final 46-32.

Desean Lewis led all scorers with 16 points, as the Eagles committed 17 turnovers on the night. They finished 3-7 from the free throw line. Scott City got 12 from Jackson Rumford and 10 from Eloy Ruelas. The Beavers were 4-7 from the free throw line and had 16 turnvoers. 

Hugoton has now won six straight in the series, and 14 of the last 15 games, as they extended their lead in the series to 23-19 since 1989.
