Explosion reported at Protection elevator

Comanche County, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Officials are investigating an explosion at a Comanche County elevator Thursday evening.

Before 6 pm on Thursday, Comanche County Communications received call from Protection Fire Chief Brian Harris regarding an explosion located at Alliance Ag and Grain in Protection, at the concrete elevator. Dispatch paged the Protection and Coldwater Fire Departments to respond under the direction of Fire Chief Greg Ellis. Ashland Kansas Fire Departments were called in for mutual aid to assist. The site was secured by the Comanche County Sheriff’s Office and Comanche County EMS were on scene to respond to any injuries.

After entry safety measures were taken, Firefighters were able to enter the structure to assess damages. The explosion was contained to the outside leg of the elevator, grain pit and enterior structures with no exterior damages occurring to the elevator.

There were no fatalities or reported injuries.

A shelter had been established at the Protection Baptist Church but no evaluations were needed.
The scene has been cleared at this time.
