Lady Demon basketball finishes 5th at Newton Invitational

The Dodge City Lady Demons went 2-1 over the weekend at the Newton Invitational, losing to Olathe Northwest in the first round, then beating Newton and Shawnee Mission Northwest in the final two games of their tournament.

Dodge City vs Olathe Northwest:

The Lady Demons opened up their weekend on Thursday afternoon with a loss to 58-39 loss Olathe Northwest. They trailed just 25-22 at the half, but the Ravens pulled away in the second half outscoring Dodge City 33-17. Dodge City was led by senior guard Addisyn Taylor, who scored 14 points, while senior forward Piper Mellinger finished the game with eight points and six rebounds.

Dodge City vs Newton:

In the second round, Dodge City ran into the hosts, Newton. The Railers gave the Lady Demons a good fight, but it was Dodge City coming out on top 42-32.

The Railers made a buzzer-beating three at the end of the first quarter to break the tie and make it 9-6 going into the second quarter. Dodge City ended the first half empty-handed from three-point range, going into the locker room down 16-14.

The second half got off to a relatively slow start, but in the fourth quarter the Dodge City press gave the Railers fits, which led to a total of 31 Newton turnovers on the game allowing the Lady Demons to pull away in the fourth quarter.

Mellinger led the Lady Demons in scoring with 16 points. The Demons ended up with four made threes on the game, including two from junior guard Emily Gutierrez.

Dodge City vs Shawnee Mission Northwest:

The Lady Demons used a huge second half to come away with the 45-36 win over Shawnee Mission Northwest, outscoring the Cougars 28-18 in the second stanza.

It all started on the glass for Dodge City, as they won the rebounding battle 36-26. Senior forward Emma Bell had 13 boards, while Mellinger had 10. Mellinger also scored 12 points to get the double-double.

The game’s leading scorer was Gutierrez, as she scored 21 points to guide Dodge City to the win.

Dodge City will get back into Western Athletic Conference play when they host Garden City on Tuesday evening. The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m., with the boys to follow. Both games will be broadcasted live on Z98.
