Goodland wins GWAC golf title

Garden City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Great West Activities Conference hit the golf course on Monday for the final time before regional competition next week, as the seven league schools faced off at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, hosted by Holcomb. Not only was it the third leg of the golf series that is part of the league race, it was the league tournament on a breezy afternoon.

Goodland would be dominant, taking the tournament title, while Scott City took second as a team and Hugoton finished in third. Braylon Mull took the top spot, shooting a 79, while Lane Stand of Hugoton was second and Holcomb’s Luke Thyne place third, each shooting a round of 80. Scott City’s Jagger Spangler-Carlson was fourth with a round of 83.

In the overall final standings for the GWAC, Goodland would repeat as league champions, Colby was second and Scott City took third. Braylon Mull won the individual title, and is the GWAC Golfer of the Year, while Hugoton’s Lane Stand took second and Luke Thyne of Holcomb was third, earning 1st Team GWAC honors. This year, the three courses used as part of the series were Sugar Hills in Goodland, Cimarron Golf Club and Buffalo Dunes. Teams and individuals get points in placement. Teams get seven for winning, second place gets six points and so forth, while the top golfer gets 15 points towards all-league status.
