Scott City splits with Hoxie in Monday night basketball

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For the first time in 30 years and seven days, Hoxie and Scott City would meet up on the hardwood. The two former NWKL foes battled at Hoxie for the first time since 1995, while the teams last played in 1996. Hoxie is now in the Mid Continent leage, while Scott City is in the Great West Activities Conference. It would be a split in the doubleheader, as the Lady Indians pulled away late for a 55-38 win, while the Beaver boys were dominant in a 64-28 rout.

The No. 3 team in Class 2A never trailed, but they were pushed at times. After Scott City got to within 4-3, Hoxie (18-1) rattle off eight straight to lead 12-3, before taking a 13-7 lead into the second quarter. The Beavers got the first basket to open the second period, but another Lady Indian run of 9-1 pushed their lead to 22-10 with 3:38 left before halftime. Scott City (6-11) would get to within 24-14 at the break, and get as close as eight late in the third quarter at 35-27. Hoxie found a way to extend its lead and maintain distance from the Lady Beavers. After Scott City made it 45-36 with 2:46 left, the Lady Indians put the game on ice with 10 straight, before settling for a 55-38 win.

Kendall Baalman led Hoxie with 17 points, while Evie Schippers poured in 12. The Lady Indians were 14-22 from the free throw line and finished with 14 turnovers. Scott City got 13 from Peyton Gentry, as the Lady Beavers shot 14-23 from teh free throw line and committed 18 turnovers.

With the win, Hoxie lead the series 11-10, and have won five consecutive dating back to 1992.

Other than the early 2-2 tie, it was all Scott City. The Beavers used a 16-1 run in the first quarter to distance themselvers from Hoxie. Scott City (9-8) scored 13 straight in the first and second to lead 31-5 early in the second frame. Another run, this time of 12-2, found the Indians trailing 43-10 with under a minute left in the first half. It was mutually agreed upon to have a continuous clock in the second half. To open the half, Hoxie, (3-15) scored the first six points, only to see the Beavers respond with 13 straight in the third to early fourth quaters. Scott City led by as many as 39, before settling for the 64-28 win.

Avery Radke led the way with 16 points for the eavers, all coming in the first half, while Junior Meza added 12. The Beavers shot 6-8 from the free throw line and had eight turnovers. Hoxie was led by freshman Davin Wade’s 13 points, as the Indians shot 7-11 at the charity line, and had 19 turnovers.

With the win, Scott City has won six straight in the series, and lead the series 16-6.
