Garden City, KS – Barton turned Saturday’s rematch into a fast-paced shootout in Garden City, pulling away late for a 124-108 win over the Broncbusters. It was the second meeting between the two KJCCC rivals this season—GCCC took the first one in Great Bend, 111-95—but the Cougars flipped the script in the return trip by controlling the paint, piling up second-chance looks, and living at the free-throw line.
The opening minutes had the feel of a heavyweight exchange. Barton struck first, but Michael Solaja answered immediately with a three to get the Broncbusters on the board, then buried another soon after as Garden City settled into rhythm offensively. Lucas Kalimba and Nico Doume added early buckets at the rim, and when Zaire Lott drilled a three, the Busters had the game right where they wanted it—trading punches and keeping Barton from building separation.
That balance didn’t last long. Barton’s pressure started creating extra possessions, and the Cougars did damage inside with repeated paint touches and put-backs. Garden City’s offense continued to find looks, but the margin grew as Barton stacked stops, attacked downhill, and forced the Broncbusters to defend multiple efforts in the same possession. By halftime, Barton had pushed in front 66-53, putting Garden City in chase mode for the final 20 minutes.
To their credit, the Broncbusters never stopped throwing haymakers. Coming out of the break, Garden City looked to reestablish pace on offense and kept searching for a run that could flip momentum. Solaja continued to space the floor, and the Busters leaned on ball movement to generate catch-and-shoot threes and driving lanes. Doume stayed aggressive around the rim, and when Dasean Lewis knocked down a three early in the second half, it felt like the start of a push.
But every time Garden City showed signs of closing the gap, Barton had an answer—usually from the lane or the stripe. The Cougars’ ability to score through contact and extend possessions with offensive rebounds was the steady separator. Barton’s lead hovered in that uncomfortable range where it’s close enough to feel reachable, but wide enough that one empty trip on offense or one defensive breakdown keeps you from making real ground.
Garden City’s offense still produced plenty. Doume powered his way to 22 points and 9 rebounds, giving the Busters a reliable interior presence. Xavier Johnson scored 17, and Solaja finished with 16 as Garden City knocked down 14 three-pointers on the afternoon. Jamir Westry posted 12 points and 9 assists, consistently creating for others, while Lewis added 11 points and 6 assists as another key playmaker in the backcourt.
The difference was Barton’s sheer volume of high-percentage chances. The Cougars piled up points in the paint, cashed in second-chance opportunities, and got to the line often—three areas that are tough to overcome even when you shoot the ball well from deep. Aris Rodriguez led the way with 39 points, Noah Williams added 24, and Jayden Ramirez provided a major lift with 22 off the bench, giving Barton multiple scoring options for the full 40 minutes.
For Garden City, the takeaway is clear: the offense can score with anyone in the league, but the margin shrinks when you give a team extra possessions and free points at the stripe—especially a Barton group that’s comfortable turning a game into a sprint. The Broncbusters will now reset and look to carry the positives forward—ball movement, perimeter shooting, and balanced scoring—into the next stretch of conference play.
Next Up: Garden City hits the road on Wednesday, February, 18th, 2026, traveling to Arkansas City to face Cowley Community College. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
