Lady Beavers swept at home by Colby

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In a battle of unbeatens in GWAC play, Scott City played host to Colby on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader that saw 18 innings of softball played. The Lady Eagles would have just enough, picking up a doubleheader sweep in a 6-3 rally in the opener, and outlated the Lady Beaver 3-2 in 11 innings in the finale.

The opener of the afternoon would come down to the final inning. Colby would score on a pair of two-out hits in the first and fourth innings to lead 2-0 halfway through the first game. Scott City wouldn’t get their first hit until the bottom of the fourth inning, and they would take advantage of that hit. On a 1-2 pitch, Adalei Zeller would clear the left field fence for a three-run home run to give the Lady Beavers a 3-2 lead. That would hold up until the top of the seventh. Following a pair of hit batters, Colby would go yard on two straight pitches. The first came from Sadie Cheney, who blasted a three-run homer to center field to give the Lady Eagles a 5-3 lead. On the very next pitch, Ryler Carter homered to make the score 6-3, which ended up being the final.

Carter went the distance, giving up three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Cheney had three RBI and Ryler Carter had two hits and drove in two runs. Baylee Wolkensdorfer took the loss, giving up six runs, five earned, on six hits with three strikeouts. Peyton Gentry had two hits with a run scored, and Adalei Zeller drove in three runs.

There were chances for both teams to score in the first nine innings in the finale. It was that both teams made solid defensive plays. The first runs were scored with two outs in the top of the 10th, on an error by Scott City that gave the Lady Eagles the early 1-0 lead. They tacked on an RBI single to extend their lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, Peyton Suppes would clear the center field fence for a two-run home run to tie the game at 2. In the 11th, Colby retook the lead on an RBI hit batter to make it 3-2. While they left the bases loaded, the Lady Eagles were able to retire the Lady Beavers in order in the bottom of the 11th to win 3-2.

Ryler Carkter struck out eight in 11 innings of work, allowing two runs on hine hits. She and Elli McCarty also had an RBI in the win. Scott City’s Riley Suppes, who came in and pitched just two innings at Ulysses in her lone start in the circle, gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits with 11 strikeouts and 10 walks in 11 innings of work. Peyton Gentry had three hits, while Suppes had two hits and drove in both runs, and Adalei Zeller had two hits.

Scott City is 8-2 overall, 4-2 in GWAC play, as they will host Ellis/Quinter on Friday. Colby 9-3 overall, and 4-0 in league play, as they will face Hugoton on the road next Tuesday.
