Scott City swept by Hugoton on Senior Night

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was Senior Night on Friday night for Scott City, as they played host to the Hugoton Eagles in GWAC play. Playing in their second to last game, the teams met up for the second time this year. Hugoton would pick up a pair of wins, as the girls hung on for a 47-46 win, while the Eagle boys used hot shooting to defeat the Beavers 71-37.

It would come down to the very end in the opener of the night. Hugoton jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, only to see Scott City respond with an 8-0 run to close the first quarter, as the game was tied at 13 after the opening period. The Lady Beavers took a brief lead early in the second quarter at 16-13, when the Lady Eagles scored seven straight to lead 20-16 with 5:47 left before the break. It would go back and forth until Hugotoon (13-9, 7-4 GWAC) took a 24-21 halftime lead. After Scott City tied it at 25 with 5:57 left in the third frame, a 10-3 run pushed the Lady Eagles out to a 38-29 lead in the final minute left the third quarter. Hugoton built a 43-33 lead with around 6:30 remaining. That’s when the Lady Beavers would slowly eliminate the deficit. Scott City (7-12, 3-7) would score the next 10 points to tie the game at 43 with 1:20 left. The Lady Eagles hit four free throws in the final 36 seconds to lead 47-43 with 15 seconds left. Needing an answer, the Lady Beavers hit a three to pull to within 47-46 with six seconds left. A foul was called on Hugoton under the basket giving Scott City the ball and a chance to win. The Lady Beavers had three chances, but couldn’t drop in the winning basket, as they would fall 47-46.

Amiley Lewis led all scorers with 23 points, 17 coming after halftime, and Natalie Villegas added 10. The Lady Eagles were 10-16 from the free throw line and had 15 turnovers. Scott City got 15 points from Peyton Gentry, 12 from Lily Lightner, and Piper Fox had 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Beavers had 20 turnovers and finished just 2-5 from the free throw line.

Hugoton swept the season series for the first time since 2022, and hold a series lead of 31-17. After Thursday, the Lady Beavers are the 11th seed, which they have clinched. Hugoton has moved up to the five seed in Class 4A West after their win.

After the game was tied at two early on, it was all Eagles after that.Hugoton used runs of five, six and seven in the first half. They took a 16-9 lead after the opening eight minutes and 37-16 at the break. While the Eagles had several runs during the night, Scott City was unable to string together two straight scoring possessions. A 12-0 run by Hugoton (18-4, 10-1 GWAC) in the third quarter pushed them out to a 63-29 lead heading into the final quarter. Scott City (10-9, 4-6) was able to stay even in the final period with the Eagles, as the final would be 71-37 for the No. 4 ranked team in Class 4A.

Gavin Salazar scored 12 of his 17 points in the second quarter to lead Hugoton while Cameron Rosas added 14. The Eagles were 7-11 from the free throw line and had five turnovers. Scott City was led by Avery Radke’s eight points, as they went 8-15 at the charity line and had 13 turnovers.

The Eagles now lead the series 26-21 since 1989, and have won back to back games. Hugoton currently holds the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A West standings, while Scott City is now sixth in the 3A Larned standings.
