Beavers close out regular season with road sweep at Cimarron

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers made the trip to Cimarron to face the Bluejays to close out the regular season on Friday night at Cimarron High School. Looking for momentum heading into sub-state play next week, the Beavers were able to bounceback from losses 24 hours earlier. The Lady Beavers cruised to a 50-31 win, while the boys pulled away for a 64-50 win.

After both teams traded baskets in the opening seconds, it was all Scott City after that. The teams traded baskets, as Crissa Irvin scored for the Lady Beavers, while Cimarron was able to get injured senior Teagan Eskam one final basket in her career at home. After that, Scott City (8-12, 4-7 GWAC) went on a 13-3 run and led 15-5 after the first quarter. The Lady Bluejays hit back to back triples to pull to within 19-11 at the 3:46 mark of the first half, when the Lady Beavers closed out with six straight to lead 25-11 at the break. It was another run for Scott City in the third quarter that separtated themselves from Cimarron (3-20, 1-11). They used an 11-0 run in the third and led 38-16 with 2:26 left in the period. The Lady Beavers built their lead to 23 early in the fourth before taking a 50-31 win.

Peyton Gentry led the way with 13 points, while Lily Lightner and Crissa Irvin added 10. Scott City was 4-11 at the foul line and had 15 turnovers. Cimarron got 15 from senior Kynlee Frink, as they went 10-16 at the free throw line and committed 26 turnovers.

With the win, Scott City has won six straight in the series, their longest streak. Cimarron leads the series 17-15.

Cimarron would lead for most of the first quarter. The final three periods belonged to the Beavers. Scott City broke an 11-all tie with a 9-2 run in the first part of the second quarter to lead 20-13 with 5:29 left before the break. The Bluejays got as close as five, after the Beavers built their lead to 30-19 with 2:05 left in the half, and took a 31-23 lead into the locker room. After Cimarron opened the second half with a basket to make it a six-point game, Scott City (11-9, 5-6 GWAC) eventually started taking control of the game, and left the Bluejays at arms length. Cimarron (4-19, 0-12) was unable to get any closer than 8 the rest of the night, as the Beavers led 49-38 heading into the fourth quarter, and led by as many as 16 late in the game, before settling for a 64-50 win.

Junior Meza lead the way with 22 points, while Avery Radke added 21 for the Beavers, as they were 13-21 at the charity line and had 12 turnovers. Cimarron got 14 from Cade Sonday, as the Bluejays went 6-10 at the foul line and committed 11 turnovers.

Scott City leads the all-time series 25-1, and have won 10 consecutive in the series.

Scott City will begin sub-state play next week. The boys are projected to host Lyons on Thursday and the girls are projected to play at Larned on Friday. Cimarron boys will likely be at Holcomb on Thursday and the girls at Beloit on Friday.
