Garden City, KS – The Garden City Community College women’s basketball team put together one of its most explosive offensive performances of the season Saturday afternoon, knocking down a new program record 19 three-pointers on the way to a 91-80 win over Cowley County in the opening round of the 2026 NJCAA Division I Plains District Tournament. The previous school record of 14 made threes had stood since the 2012-13 season against Midland. Saturday, the Broncbusters rewrote that mark in emphatic fashion behind a huge outing from Sokhna Ndiaye and a red-hot perimeter attack.

With the win, Garden City advanced to the next round and will now travel to face Butler Community College on Tuesday, March 10, with tipoff to be announced.

After Cowley scored the game’s first four points, the Broncbusters wasted little time settling in from the outside. Elektra Mjoll buried back-to-back threes in the opening quarter, and Ndiaye soon followed with triples of her own as Garden City began to find its rhythm. The opening period featured several momentum swings, with Cowley getting strong production from Saliyah Henderson-Johnson, but the Busters answered every run with shot-making from the perimeter. Ndiaye capped the first quarter with another three in the closing seconds, helping Garden City erase an early deficit and send the game into the second tied at 21-21.

The second quarter was where the Busters began to separate. Mjoll connected from deep twice in a span of 15 seconds to flip the lead, then Paula Fernandez sparked a major surge off the bench. Fernandez caught fire from beyond the arc and knocked down three second-quarter triples, stretching the floor and forcing Cowley to chase. Garden City closed the half on a strong note, taking a 43-32 lead into the break after outscoring Cowley 22-11 in the quarter.

The outside shooting barrage only continued after halftime. Cowley trimmed the margin to two possessions in the third, but Garden City answered again with timely threes and composure. Ndiaye drilled another triple midway through the quarter, Fernandez hit back-to-back threes during a critical stretch, and the Busters closed the frame with one more long ball from Fernandez at the buzzer to take a 63-50 lead into the fourth. That closing sequence gave Garden City firm control and kept Cowley from generating sustained momentum.

In the final quarter, the Broncbusters continued to answer every challenge. Cowley made several pushes, but Garden City’s offense was too efficient and too balanced. Ndiaye scored at all three levels, Roberson added key interior baskets, and Mjoll knocked down two more threes in the closing minutes to put the game out of reach. When the final horn sounded, Garden City had totaled 91 points, including 19 made three-pointers on 36 attempts, while shooting 52.8 percent from beyond the arc as a team. The Busters also finished with 25 assists24 bench points, and 23 points off turnovers in one of their best all-around offensive games of the year.

Ndiaye turned in a sensational performance, leading all scorers with 36 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 6-of-9 from three-point range, while also going a perfect 10-for-10 at the free-throw line. She added eight rebounds and five assists to cap one of the top individual outings of the season. Mjoll added 22 points, knocking down 6-of-11 from long range, while Fernandez came off the bench and poured in 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, all seven field goals coming from behind the arc. Together, Ndiaye, Mjoll, and Fernandez combined for 79 of Garden City’s 91 points and 19 made threes, accounting for the entire new program record.

Garden City also got valuable contributions throughout the lineup. Roberson finished with six points and five rebounds, Fisher added six assists and helped drive the offense despite limited scoring, and the Busters finished with a 28-27 edge on the glassLondon Turner contributed on the boards and defensively, while Luana Luz added a late basket and hustle plays in key moments.

Saturday’s result was a statement performance for a Garden City team that has shown all year it can be dangerous when the offense gets rolling. In postseason play, the Busters delivered exactly that, combining record-setting shooting with balanced execution and timely answers whenever Cowley threatened.
