City of Dodge City gives update on nitrate results
DODGE CITY, Kansas–The City of Dodge City has received results from a follow up test conducted in response to the previously reported elevated nitrate levels. The test indicated a nitrate level of 6.42 mg/L within the current water system. For reference, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) set the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for nitrate at 10 mg/L. These results align with the City’s earlier calculations, confirming levels are below the established standard.
The secondary test was conducted by a third-party laboratory that holds National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) certification, which is recognized by KDHE. Prior to releasing these results, the City received approval from KDHE to share this information with the public. The City of Dodge City will still proceed with official KDHE testing once the test kit has been received.
Based on these results, the water supply meets all safety standards. Alternative water distribution will no longer be provided. Residents with additional questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the City of Dodge City Public Works Department at (620) 225-8170. Thank you to the community of Dodge City for your patience and understanding of the situation.
