Beavers, Longhorns split GWAC doubleheader

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Entering Tuesday, both Holcomb and Scott City entered with idential regular season and GWAC records. After Tuesday, they would leave with the same records. The teams would split a doubleheader in Scott City, as the Beavers rallied for a 4-3 win in the opener, while the Longhorns took the finale in six innings 20-10.

Scott City 4, Holcomb 3, Game 1
Scott City never led until the very end in a game that turned into a defensive battle. The Longhorns grabbed an early 1-0 lead that would last until the bottom of the third, when the Beavers tied it at 1. In the fourth, Holcomb came back with two runs in the top of the frame to lead 3-1. That would hold up until the bottom of the inning, when Scott City got a run back. Heading in to the bottom of the seventh, Scott City had played in four consecutive walk-off games. They were able to push the tying run across to tie the game at three. With one out and the bases loaded, Spencer Cramer found a hole in the drawn in infield to push the winning run across in a 4-3 win.

Emilio Contrereas had two RBI, while Avery Radke, Aaren Radke and Uli Armendariz came around with two hits apiece. Easton Eisenhour picked up the win, giving up three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Maxson Smiley took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned on nine hits and eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work. Max Brookover had two hits in the loss.

The finale of the day would produce 30 runs. Scott City grabbed the 2-1 lead after the first inning. However, Holcomb added five runs in the second to rgain the lead 6-2. The Beavers responded with four runs to tie the game at 6 after two innings of play. After that, the Longhorns never trailed, as they scored at least one run in every inning. They would open iup an 11-6 lead heading in to the bottom of the fifth. Scott City had one more run, as they pulled to within 11-9 after scoring three runs int he bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, Holcomb opened the game up with nine runs, and yielded a run in the bottom of the sixth, as they picked up a 20-10 win.

Ryan Wickwar went an inning-pulus, giving up four runs on three hits. Eli Novack got the win in relief, allowing two unearned runs on two hits in two innings of work. Max Brookover had three hits and drove in four runs in the win, while Jacob Olvedo had three hits and drove in three runs. Spencer Cramer took the loss, giving up six runs, four earned, on five hits in 1 1/3 of work. Aaren Radke went 4 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs, six earned, on six hits. Emilio Contreras led the way with two hits and two RBI.

Both teams leave 5-3 overall, and 3-1 in GWAC play. Scott City will begin their six-game road swing, as they play a doubleheader at Lakin on Thursday. Holcomb visits TMP Marian on Friday.
