Newton, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – It was not the conclusion that Coach David Upton and his Garden City Lady Buffs were looking for, but it was a positive finish to the 37th Annual Newton Invitational girls Basketball Tournament for 2013. The Garden City girls were defeated on Friday night by Bishop Carroll 54-46 sending the Lady Buffs to the 7th place game at noon on Saturday. In the semi-final consolation game with Bishop Carroll, the Lady Buffs jumped out to a 13-0 advantage in the first four minutes of quarter number one, but could not make that quick start last. The Lady Eagles began chipping away at the Garden City lead and cut it down to 5 at the end of one 21-16, four at halftime 25-21 and one at the end of the 3rd quarter 33-32. In the 4th and final quarter, the Lady eagles connected on 9 of 14 from the free throw line and hit five field goals including a trey to take the lead and hang on for the 54-46 win over Garden City. The Buffs had two players in double figures, Taryn Tempel with 14 and Jayme Bernbeck with 12.

In the final game of the Newton Mid-Season it was a different story and a different quality of team the Lady Buffs faced with Goddard, that started four freshmen and a sophomore. Garden City was able to assert its will and take a comfortable lead throughout the game and ended up with a 24 point victory at 51-27 over the 1-10 Lady Lions. The Lady Buffs were led in scoring with three players in double figures, junior Taryn Tempel dropped in 15, senior post player Johna McClelland chipped in 14 and sophomore Jayme Bernbeck added 12. Coach David Upton commented in the post game about saving his players for a big Tuesday night match-up and getting some rest with the game in hand.
