Lady Beavers close regular season with split against Hugoton

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In the regular season finale on Tuesday, Scott City played host to Hugoton in a matchup that would feature plenty of runs. Both teams would exit with a win, as the Lady Eagles hung on for a 15-12 win in the opener, while the Lady Beavers took the final 13-8.

It looked like the Lady Eagles were going to cruise to a run-rule victory, as they built a 13-run lead. Hugoton led 2-1 after the first inning, and blew the game open with a six-run third to take an 11-1 lead. The Lady Beavers responded with a run in the third, but a Lady Eagle three-run fourth and one more in the fifth put the lead up to 15-2. However, Scott City rallied, scoring five runs in the fifth, and cut the deficit in half with four runs in the sixth to pull to within 15-11. They were only able to add one more run to make the final 15-12.

Lexy Hickey would have three hits and drive in two runs for Hugoton, and Ailyn Valles drove in three runs. The Lady Eagles had 12 hits, as Emily Tinoco gave up 12 runs, only three earned, on 14 hits with two strikeouts. Piper Fox had three hits and four RBI for Scott City as they also saw Crissa Irvin and Peyton Gentry collect three hits apiece, as part of the team’s 14 hits. Baylee Wolkensdorfer allowed 15 runs, eight earned, on 12 hits in seven innings.

The Lady Beavers used their late inning momentum in the first game to get them started in the finale. Scott City would score four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 4-0 lead. Hugoton would respond in their next at bat with four runs of their own to tie the game up at 4. It would remain tied until the bottom of the fourth, when the Lady Beavers doubled up their score to take an 8-4 lead. After the Lady Eagles pulled to within 8-5, four more Scott City runs came across in the fifth to extend their lead to 12-5. Hugoton got a solo home run from Janette Gonzalez in the sixth innnig and added two more runs in the seventh to make the final 13-8.

Piper Fox had three hits and four RBI in game two, while Crissa Irvin and Baylee Wolkensdorfer had three hits in the second game. Wolkensdorfer struck out eight, giving up eight runs, three earned, on nine hits. Janette Gonzalez had three RBI in game two for the Lady Eagles. Emily Tinoco surrendered 13 runs, four earned, on 14 hits in seven innings of work in the circle.

Scott City closed out the regular season 7-13 overall, 3-9 in GWAC play. They’ll face Colby in the opening round of the Class 3A Regional on Monday in Goodland. Hugoton ends the regular season at 9-13 overall, 6-6 in league play, as they will be on the road for Class 4A Regional play next week.
