Scott City cross country aims for high state finishes
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Over the last few years, Scott City cross country has found themselves at the state meet as a team. A new season and some newcomers to the team has not changed the expectations of what the 2025 team wants to accomplish.
The boys placed sixth last year as a team in Class 3A, and will have several new faces on the varsity. Three runners return from the state qualifying team. The top returner from state is sophomore Michael Hermosillo, who placed 20th as a freshman. Seniors Kasten Wren and Avery Radke also return. Only six boys runners comprise of the team this year.
For the girls, 11 runners make up of the girls team that finished fifth in Class 3A in 2024. The girls squad did not graduate a senior, and added runners to the program. Returning is top finisher from last year is sophomore Brailey Cook, who was 27th as a freshman at state, and veteran senior Belle Trout was 38th. Also returning from last year’s state team are junior Halle Erazo, sophomore’s Maci Lara and Hannah Winter, and seniors Jayden O’Brien and Kami Winderlin.
Joey Meyer enters his sixth season as the Beaver cross country coach, while Shannon York is a first year assistant for the program.
Scott City opens the season at Goodland on September 4, and will have road trips in September to Hesston and Rim Rock Farm outside of Lawrence.
