Blues sweep twin bill

Garden City, Ks (westernkansasnews)-Blues coach Lyle Befort is more than pleased with his starting pitching; it’s been the defense behind them that has been suspect at times. On Monday night at Lightner Field-Finney County overcame a couple of early miscues to sweep a doubleheader from Hooker, Ok 7-6 and 8-0.

In the first game, the Blues dug themselves an early, three-run deficit. Then Jake Curran’s bat awoke. The Garden-City product slapped a two-run triple in the fifth; an inning that saw the Blues plate three runs.

“I was trying to go where the pitcher threw the ball-that simple,” Curran said.

His simple approach paid off again in the bottom of the sixth when Curran ripped a walk-off  single down the left field line.

“We came back against these guys in Ulyssses,” Curran said. “We were down two runs in Ulysses and overcame that so we knew we could do it. We were hitting the ball; we just needed to find the gaps.”

In game two-Finney County (18-5) found plenty of gaps. The blues scored four runs in the 1st inning, which included a three-run blast by Curran.

“That home run-I took it to right because he threw it outside,” Curran said. “I’ve been working on that quite a bit.”

Blues starter Mario Montoya allowing just one in the second game.

The win is the Blues fifth in their last six games.

Next up: 25th Annual Clanton Memorial Tournament; July 5th 9 pm vs. Alma at Lightner Field
