Dodge City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Coaches love fast starts. What Dodge City head man Charles Johnson got Tuesday night was more than he could have dreamed of.

The Red Demons netted two goals in the game’s first 20 minutes on their way to a 2-0 win over Garden City at Memorial Stadium.

“We really opened up quickly,” Johnson said. “We were moving the ball around very well.”

Sophomore Brandon Chavez kicked the Red Demons to an early lead when he blasted a shot past Garden City goalie Israel Reyes-giving Dodge City (8-0) a 1-0 advantage at the four-minute mark.

“After that goal, we settled into a real poor attack mode,” Johnson said. “We knew that couldn’t happen because Garden City definitely brought it.”

The offensive lull ended in the 20th minute when Mario Lopez found a streaking Tim Schwara, who cut it back to his right and fit a perfect shot passed the reaching Reyes to make it 2-0 Red Demons.

“Our first half was very good,” Johnson said.

As for the final 40 minutes: That was a different story.

“I wasn’t happy really with our second half by any stretch,” Johnson said. “We didn’t play the style we wanted to play. We didn’t work the way we should have worked.”

Senior captain Juan Negrete echoed his coach’s sentiments.

“We need to improve on the defensive side,” Negrete said. “We need to work on our savy.”

Of course it helps to have a staple in the goalie box. The defense got plenty of help from keeper Pablo Landa who turned back 13 Garden City shots.

“He made some saves that I”m pretty confident that no one in this conference can make,” Johnson said. “He was very good tonight.”

With the loss the Buffs fall to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

“We just didn’t take advantage of our opportunities,” Garden City coach Josue Negron said. ” We just couldn’t get the ball in the net.”
